ok so no job at the minute, would take anything to be honest but how easy would it be to train as a hgv driver. i assume this takes years? anyone on here do anything like this?
cheers

Be carefull when looking for a training provider as there are a lot of Cowboy outfits out there. If your going to go with one do a bit of homework on them.

Hi mate,

I've just done my HGV - 5 day course and test on the 6th day. Luckily for me, I secured a job just before I started my course (non-HGV). The money's not great and you'll have to spent the first year or 2 driving for agencies before anyone'll take you on full time permanently. Also, as mentioned, there are a lot of cowbow outfits and a lot of brokers out there - avoid both. Get down to any potential training provider, check them out, check their vehicles out, and never part with cash until you're totally satisfied.

Might I suggest registering HERE. Lots of info and advice available. Let them know where you are and you'll get some training recommendations in your area.

Hope that helps.

some decent advise here.
it doesnt take long to train but as said it might take you a long while to get a proper, permanent job but good luck with it on test etc! :)

Normally plenty of agency work this time of year though, get to the end of November and drivers are like rocking horse poo. You might find a different story Jan>March.

You have to pass 4 different sections now to drive professionally.

Theory Test
Hazard Perception

Driver CPC << This was quite hard, you have to read pretty much the whole HGV book. Not as easy as remembering multiple choice questions as you need to know about different operator licences and different truck/load types.

Practical Test
Practical Theory ( Not sure if this is included in the practical at the end ).

The money is nothing special. A friend of mine drove an HGV for Sainsburys. Was getting about £7 p/h.

Sainsburys/wincanton warehouse ops get 20k a year so i cant see that being correct, my vrother in law is a hgv driver for wincanton and on around 30k.

You need to be Fat and ignorant, then you will fit in.

On a serious note, its a hard job, as in silly hours and days away from home.

He was an agency driver tbf. :)

Acually, thinking about, it I am not sure. He was working really long hours though. Crashed his truck a couple of times as well.

There is a guy on here who works for Eddie Stobart. He tells us he gets paid about £8 an hour.

Totally not worth it when you can earn more sitting in an air conditioned office.

cost me £800 total for class 2.

i been doing agency for bout a year earning £7 per hour, £10 on sats.

i enjoy it and its not very difficult tho this depends entirely on where u work.

i had 3 days of lessons and test on 4th day, passed with 2 minors, if your within driving distance of bolton i reccomend truck training uk.
