Me and a colleague are looking at doing a home learning CompTIA +A course and eventually the server module as well however we're having trouble finding an honest and decent looking course provider.

Can anyone here recommend a good course provider or are there any we should steer well clear of?

Thanks in advance

If you're a competent PC technician, then just take the test anyway, I think you only need 70% for a pass iirc. Both exam were about £100 each (you can only take one at a time with a break in between). You could just read through some books which is what i did for both parts of the A+

For the A+ just buy the Mike Meyers book and study from that (its what I did), no need to spend money or go for official courses. Book your exam with prometric they have test centres all over the country, also better do it before next Jan (2011) because after that date the cert will only last 3 yrs not life as it is now.

If you know your way around windows you should pass it ok anyway.:)

This. If you have any IT experience (even just home builds etc.), then just pick up a couple of A+ books each, and swap with eachother when you're done with them. You'll save a TON of money and still be fully prepared for what is, in all honestly, a **** easy exam.

This is something we are considering but we're also considering course providers hence the thread.

NB we're not paying for any of this, we need to get approval from our managers which is why we have to do the digging, so cost isn't a factor.

One wonders why you are going down the home learning route if work are providing funding.

Please I just want peoples recommendations of decent course providers ideally from their own experiances. Not to be rude but I don't want other peoples opinions on what they think I should be doing.

Well I've given you the names of two training providers I have used in the past. They have quite a few learning centres dotted around.

If you're saying it is £7000 for two of you to pass A+ (which is worth about 50p more than the paper it is printed on) then I would counsel you to not bother.

No worries but you did mention "home training" in your OP, so I guess people assumed this was for yourself and wanted to save you some cash..

Firebrand training is who we've used.

The Mike Meyers (CompTIA A+ Certification exam guide 7th edition) book will have everthing necessary for the course in it.

We are only trying to help.

I know, but we have no one else in the company who knows how these things work and having that guidance and pressure to actually study and pass is appealing (if we don't pass/study the MD won't be happy).

I'm looking at every provider thats been suggested, its nice to get a recommendation because you dont know how many of these are fly-by-nights or competely crap.

If you know windows and you know how to build a pc and basic fault find the book will just be revision + 1 or 2 things you maybe didnt know. It took me 3 months to get ready for the exams using the book alone. The Mike Meyers books are considered one of the best and are listed on the compTIA website.
