Due for a change in circumstances, dreaming of a car change a little, been having a look on Pistonheads and there are a number of M6's on there around £27-30k with mileage sub 40k.

That seems like a mental price on a car which was 80k+ new and most are only 5 years old.

ive always wanted a P1, maybe an M5 but an M6 at this money looks mad.

Its a little bit of a dream but with some hard work, who knows.

So who can tell me about how much these things actually cost to run, service etc etc as im under no illusions its a lot!

Well I had an M5 for about 18 months which is esentially the same running costs.

servicing I think was about £350 for an oil service. I imagine insp 1 and 2 are more like £700 but i can't remember exactly, i am sure Fox will confirm!

10-12mpg around town, 20-22mpg on motorway. 25mpg if you stick the cruise on at about 60mph which i did once just to see.

full set of pads supplied and fitted by dealer was £800 :(

Tyres are going to be c. £1000 a set with rears lasting not very long at all if you drive at all like its meant to be.

Early cars has issues with clutches were revised, search for red cog of death, but I think this would set you back about £1.5-£2k to sort if not done already. Mine went at about 9k miles!

Depends on how long you intend on keeping it and how much mileage you do.

The main cost will be fuel though. I seldom saw more than 12mpg on mine, and more often around 9mpg ! But that was all non-motorway mileage. Expect to pay around £70 a tank and get around 200 miles from it.

Personally, I would be reluctant to buy such a car out of warranty. I've had two E60 M5's, and neither has had any serious problems, the most being a faulty SMG sensor. For the ~ £800 / year, I think it's worth considering the BMW warranty.

Could you really get a 5 year old M6 covered under BMW warranty for £800 a year?

Appreciate the responses, ive done no groundwork on this at all but I was expecting hefty servicing, tyres and real poor economy but some numbers to go with that are great.

Must work harder I think, but 28-30K for an M6 is stuff dreams are made of if you can actually run the thing!
