Hey all, as title says; contract expires tomorrow.

I'm up for ANY suggestions, need unlim texts and net, minutes aren't a big deal, minimum 100.

Touch screen on keypad, doesn't matter. Just want the best value for money right now that will let me check my gmail/facebook/online banking.

GO - all suggestions considered.

Thanks in advance

S

The best value for money?

Orange San Francisco + The cheapest sim only deal you can find.
or
Desire/Galaxy S 24 month contract on the various retention sites (mobiles.co.uk etc)

I agree about the San Francisco in conjunction with the cheapest sim only unlimited net deal you can find.

Forget the Desire if you have simple requirements, as you'll just be paying for things you don't need.

Are they both available in the UK?

I know the Galaxy S is.. Heard bad things about the signal though? Have you tried them?

Also, for the tripple post:

Found the HTC Wildfire with 16 months free contract. Out of 24 months.

£25 a month, unlim texts, 500mb data allow and 300 minutes.

Good phone? It'd cost be £200 for two years on Orange.

- £50 cashback from quidco too ;) That makes it £150 over 24 months (Make sure your happy with redemption, you still pay orange £25pm)

Then sell/recycle the wildfire for £80-£100 and get the orange SF :D (as a current orange customer you'll get it for £89 too apparently ;))

£6pm for 300mins/unlimited texts/500mb + free orange SF, can anyone better that?

(The wildfire has a small, low res screen and slower cpu)

Edit:

The Desire/Galaxy S still represent great value for money, £360/£380 over 2 years for a high end phone is cracking. (They're faster, have full gps and are built to a higher spec etc)

I have a quidco account :)

That's a really good set up, how will the orange SF hold out? Does it have a 3.5mm jack? How do the redemptions work? Do they just send the money back at regualar intevals? Do I have to do anything to get them to send it? Or is it automatic DD.

Desire HD? Better ppi? Nicer screen? Faster? Think it'll knock the Desire down in price? Right now I can get the desire 300mins, unlim texts, 500mb for 25£ a month. Total cost over 2 years is £412.50. What d'you think?

S (thanks guys)

You need to post/email mobiles.co.uk your orange bill every so often to prove your still paying for the contract.

The desire won't come down much more on those redemption deals (maybe a extra free month here or there)

Go to a shop, try them out and pick your fav. None of them will break the bank :) (although the orange SF/Wildfire could end up costing £200 less)

Ah ok! I can just forward the online bill to them via email from work. Won't take 5 minutes every couple months.

The Wildfire looks like a kids phone compared to the Desire.

Which would you go for a and why?

I went for the £412.50 (£362.50 with quidco) Desire deal a few months back and couldn't be happier (whilst waiting for the iPhone 4 to get released and the Galaxy S was still expensive back then)

Personally, I'd try out the Galaxy S, Desire and Orange SF at orange or cpwh etc and see which one you like (or decide if the SF is good enough to save ~£200 over the other two)

It's worth noting both the Desire and Galaxy S come unlocked from mobiles.co.uk (no orange bloatware) and you can unlock/root the SF quite easily.

Alternatively, you could keep your phone, go on a rolling 1 month contract and see what the reviews say about the Desire HD, Desire Z :)

How does the Desire perform in comparision to the Iphone 3G? Faster? Same touchscreen tech?

I don't think i'll have much of a problem rooting etc, SSH'd into my old iPhone and played with it a lot.

The Galaxy S is going around the same price as the Desire - So probably a toss up between those two.

Desire vs 3G? That's a bit unfair on the poor old 3G, even the £100 orange SF is better :D (well, apart from build quality and um.. err.. hmm... oh yeah, full gps!)

The only real issue that bugged me going from a 3G to the Desire was adjusting to its super glossy screen (v.poor in direct sunlight)

My HTC Hero brays my dads 3G, never mind the desire :p If you just after a few basic functions then your probaly best off simply going for the san fran and getting it as cheap as possible, but if you fancy playing games in your spare time youll probably be better off with the desire.

Does the San Fran have a 3.5mm headphone input? Cause that would be worth £200 extra to me. Don't want to mess about with adaptors/worse headphones.

What's the music player like on android?? Have options? Can I just drag and drop mp3's for playback?

Thanks all,

S

Yep, its got a 3.5mm socket. No idea what the audio quality is like though (my guess is good, most off the shelf components produce decent results these days)

Theres loads of media players out on the market if the standard one isn't good enough (both desire and Samsung come with custom players that are quite good) You can drag and drop or sync to a music library too.

Think I'm sold, gona go instore and get one. I can just put any sim only contract in and I'm sorted right?

Thanks a lot all
