Confessions of a hardware addict.

I have never done a whole system like that, though I have claimed that some parts that came a few weeks after a build were part of the original just they were out of stock originally

A few white lies regarding the price of items isn't bad really as I think everyone does a little. A whole new pc though is a bit extreme.

I can appreciate where you are coming from. My gf wanted to buy a heater for the living room, so I used it as an excuse to by 2 GTX460s for folding. :D

You should do some folding@home on that rig, then you can use the excuse that your PC is doing medical research. There's always a reason to buy more hardware when folding :D

A monitor is hard to conceal.

Keeping the same case and incremental upgrades is easy. But why bother. As long as I do not buy new stuff every month we do not fall out over it. I am old fashioned and tip up every month leaving me a couple of hundred plus of disposable, she does all the bills and shopping, I buy what I need and occasionally this is computer ware. Annual bonus usually occasions a partial upgrade.

Am I really the only one who thinks the OP is a wuss? can't tell the missus you want a new PC so order one behind her back, then can't bring yourself to tell her you got actually got one?
If i ever want any thing new I tell the missus i "need" it, then I buy it, she accepts it because that's what they do, they accept you for who you are.
If you have to lie to your missus about spending nearly a grand of your own money on some thing you really want, then you don't deserve her TBH, this is some thing she wont accept and will probably leave you over.

Whilst you are entirely entitled to your opinion, my story is told with a degree of light hearted humour, and I am grateful to be able to read all the light hearted replies - Sadly I see none of this in your post, so I'll thank your for keeping your opinon on whether I deserve my girlfriend, entirely to yourself.

But to everyone else, thanks for your replies, its making me chuckle.

I just order stuff without mentioning it to her and then let my gf sign for it when it arrives (she wasn't impressed with the two "huge" boxes yesterday). My other interest - triathlon - means I have parcels turning up on a regular basis. She never queries the cost and I just make sure that every now and then, one of the parcels is for her!

Sorry, but if you can't handle mixed opinions then you shouldn't be posting the fact that you have to lie to your missus about spending money on a public forum should you.
Light-hearted or not, on a site like this you are always going to run into people different from you who don't agree with what you do. If you can't handle it then you shouldn't be here.

Your comments would be welcome if we had been discussing something on which strong and possibly aggravating opinions are relevant, not your personal wish to direct an attack on my character, or the relationship I have with my girlfriend.

You are very quick to assume that this is the way members of these forums behave, given you been a member for only a matter of days.

I agree with jarvis82. This is a light hearted topic and I am enjoying other peoples story without your disruptive post that brings nothing to this thread. When you have a girlfriend/wife and are living with them (stopper, for which I presently assume you don't) there are other responsibilities i.e. bills and family, rather than "I make my money, I spend it how I want".

But in response to this thread:
Before I move in with my girlfriend, I plan to buy as much hardware as possible :D so she won't complain. In fact she doesn't understand why I bought a £120 SSD drive so that Windows could start up 25 seconds quicker then it use too..... haha...... When you really think about it, I suppose she does have a point :-P

I appreciate both your response, and your addition to the story! They do have a point don't they, but then they do about everything, and arguably we don't have a leg to stand on.

Wow. Just don't respond to any ads with a GSOH requirement - you'd be guilty of misrepresentation :p

I think it's fairly clear that it's a light hearted topic and judgements on whether the OP "deserves" his significant other or not are just way off the mark.

FWIW, my missus has just become resigned to the odd parcel appearing now and again and as long as it doesn't interfere with her <famous auction site> shenanigans, she doesn't mind too much. At least not to my face :D
