Mate is joining my firm next month and needs to buy a car as he is handing his company car in, my firm offer more money for the less C02 the car produces.

Needs to be ......

Good enough for 2 kids and easily put a dog in the boot (no saloons)
<121g C02 to get the best car allowance
Best value for easy chipping to increase power
Needs to be >1st march 2001 as the V5 doesn't have the C02 printed, if later regardless of output we get >185 rate which is pants and £150 pm less than <121
Budget £5k + £450 for the chip (bluefin??)
To do 100 miles per day 20 - 25k per year
Less than 2ltr (another company clause) but I expect that's a fete de complete with <121 g C02
Not fussed about a/c cruise etc

Your thoughts?

25k a year and he isnt fussed about AC or cruise?

Whats the deal here - is he actually buying the car? Or is the company buying it? It makes a difference.

If he's buying a second hand cheap car why does the CO2 matter?

For £5k if he wants under 120g/km he is going to need to buy a Corsa CTDi or similar - perhaps a Panda diesel. Nothing else will be under 120g/km. All the good stuff thats under 120g/km is more than £5k.

Sorry yes he's buying and then we get an allowance back based on C02, he really wants <121 so he can get the max and really isn't into motors, cruise I agree with him as its mostly London driving but A/C yes agree with you Fox is a must, but he's not bothered.

You say more than £5k, what would you push to to get a decent chippable car ???

Most cars have AC anyway.

Dont bother with chipping, all the cars in his budget are going to be cruddy ecowagons, waste of time chipping them.

Golfs and the like with under 120g/km are twice his budget.

The allowance (depending on grade) ranges between £275 per month for <121 down to £125 per month for >185, it's all about our CSR policy / green car policy

Doing 25K a year and wanting <120g/km carbons is perfect BMW 320ed territory.

Unfortunately to bring along the dog the Touring is over 120g/km unless you go for the 318d which is bang on 120g/km.

And of-course neither are £5k :p.

If he is getting an allowance, why not just lease a new car?
If you need the car for work, do you really want some £5k car that might go wrong or have hidden issues?
What about when the car is in the garage, does your company give out a pool car etc?

Company cars are great because you have one fixed cost and relative safety of always having access to a car.

Not sure if your scheme is the same, but remember tax on the vehicle is based on original purchase price or something, not the 2nd hand price your friend pays £5k or under). Think that's right!

He wont pay company car tax if he's taking an allowance and buying his own car with it.

Isn't there a BMW business edition or something, even less spec than the ED to get it Ito lowest tax band!

Ah cool, wasn't sure how it worked with the allowance :)

Seriously, they are £30,000 cars!

Like anyone buys one themselves :p.

Can't imagine they cost much to lease though (on a business lease) if you chose to stay in the Company scheme rather than spending £5k of your own on something moon-mileage....

Company is flexible if I need to service mine I work from home, if it ever breaks down then I get the train.

I was sort of hoping there would be 100k + bluemotions around by now but it looks like there's none :(

Lease is a no go waste of money

Why we are talking about current model BMW's costing thousands and thousands of pounds more than the £5k budget?

Oh I'm sorry, you never discuss something slightly off topic in a thread do you.
