AMD has recently postponed the launch schedule of its next-generation Radeon HD 6000 series GPUs (Southern Islands) from the original October 12 to November, according to sources from graphics card makers.

Seeing its chance, Nvidia aims to launch its new entry-level GPUs as well as cut its existing GPU prices in October to boost the market share, the sources noted.

Both AMD and Nvidia declined to comment on their products' launch schedule.

Due to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) skipping its 32nm R&D for GPUs and advanced directly to 28nm R&D, AMD has adjusted its plans and decided to continue adopting a 40nm process for its new Radeon HD 6000 series. However, due to the series' GPU structure and processes being similar to the existing 5000 series, some market watchers are taking a conservative attitude toward the new products.

In response, Nvidia plans to launch its new entry-level GeForce GT 430 in October, while reducing the price of its GeForce GT 220 and GTX 460 768MB graphics cards.

Not great news for AMD they could have milked the market a bit, delays will mean having to reduce the prices a bit as nVidia have more room to manouver.

If nVidia had any sense they'd capitalise on this and slash the prices of the 460 and 470 - might take a bit of a hit in the short term but it would pay off in the slightly longer term.

I actually think this is good for consumers, in that the launch price may well be lower thanks to the competition. You won't feel like you're getting ripped off early in the launch in other words.

Proberly still be too high simply since they know people will want to play there favorite games for the Xmas holidays and will pay that bit extra.... or even worse a high quality popular game releasing around the same time would do it which it is ;)

Who knows. Maybe there will even be a certain mysterious game bundled with them at launch. ;)

delayed to November?

last time there was news about the 6000's release the verdict was really December if they were lucky

If I was going to upgrade which I doubt I will as I have a 5850 which I am happy with it would be for the 6850/70. I'm guessing this delay wont affect those cards as they were due to be released in November anyway.

Probably just skip this generation and wait for the 28nm cards and upgrade full system, with the new Intel/AMD CPUs coming out.

To my knowledge the 12th of October is the conference that Amd are rumoured to be officially announcing the 6 series. Only the 6770 is rumoured to release in October the 68xx cards were ment to be November anyway. It's also been known for quite some time that the 40nm process would be used as tsmc had problems with 32nm and have opted to skip it in favour of 28nm.

so on the 12th they will reveal everything about the 6xxx cards
this will include pricing i take it ? as well as specs

This is what I thought. Assuming that the HD6870 takes the single GPU performance crown and the HD6850 takes the GTX470 clean out of the equation, wouldn't they be better lowering prices at the high end rather than introducing a new low-end part and slashing the price of the GTX460-768?

Bit odd to me.

So how long before people take these rumoured dates as fact and start the usual "zomg teh cards are late!!!111" rhetoric. Happens just about every time a card release is upcoming. :p
