Sexism?

It's only sexist if it's against a women*

*tongue in cheek

No need to be tounge in cheek at all, its entirely true.

Equality laws ceased to be about equality a long time ago. If only I had born a female member of an ethnic minority, who was gay, disabled and had not been schooled properly and I would be a guaranteed millionaire by now :p

On a serious note though I stick by my original point, equality laws are no longer about equality but giving an unfair advantage of the minority over the majority as if it is some sort of god given right that this should be the way things are.

Looking smart isn't a bad thing you know :p

Clothes are a huge part of most women's lives, they would probably argue being told what to wear is against their human rights or something!

It seems to me that most women only want 'equal rights' when it suits them, which is a bit stupid but what can you expect.... ;)

They want Equal Rights, but only from a female perspective...

It's just another way to confuse the hell out of us.

I thought men and women were different both physically and psychologically. Aparantly I'm wrong and modern day society dictates that we're perfectly equal and the same.

I must be living in a parallel universe.

Please do give examples - the objective of equality legislation is simply to give people of either sex an equal opportunity to do whatever, if it's doing more than that then something may have gone wrong somewhere.

Although this quote will probably be seized upon and taken in the wrong way the thought behind it is valid "The defect of equality is that we only desire it with our superiors" - Henry Beque. That is not to say that men are superior but that we will only tend to seek equality where it is to our advantage, we're much less apt to pursue equal status where we lose out in some way.

Indeed. I am only posting in jest tbh. ;)

In reality I believe that all people, regardless of sex, religion, orientation, colour, or race should be given equal opportunities and should be treated equally under the law.

I'll still make tongue-in-cheek comments however, as long as the wife isn't watching anyway.:p

In any position a woman will always perform differently from a man. Her decisions making, planning , dealing with tasks etc will always be thought out differently possibly to do with female brain which I believe does differ from a male brain:).

Indeed.

The waters are muddied as soon as the powers-that-be make up some proportion or 'quota' which needs to be filled with whichever minority is currently in vogue - be that those with a disability, of a different colour, female, whatever.

I think it's perfectly acceptable that women often end up in caring/service professions and men gravitate to the more technical/menual etc. - as long as those that want to cross the gender divide can do so without obstruction.

One big barrier to this is our parental leave - instead of surrounding women with lots of time off and red-tape upon their return to work, how about granting men rights to a large proportion of the leave so that they might equally disappear from the workforce for say 6 months?

I have to jump in here since I taught Equality & Diversity for 2 years.
The first question on the presentation is "What does Equality & Diversity mean to you" and the most commonest answer is "We're all equal".
The funniest answer was "It's all about blacks in it" and that was from a black female NHS staff member.

Anyway, Equality & Diversity is recognising that we are all different and diverse but to give everybody the same opportunities.
This can happen in most cases but we all now that positive discrimination goes on.

So no, men and women aren't the same but can be given the same opportunities.

In my experience they usually perform better than men, especially with planning, decision making etc....

I cannot count how many times my Wife has pulled my arse out of the fire by planning or remembering stuff I completely forget or leave to the last minute.

Thank God for the differences I say.

I don't understand why women want to be equal when they could be better.

That shows a lack of ambition to me.

Which is why men are better.

*runs away in fear of not being funny*

Women have the same restrictions as men in most work-places, clothing-wise.

No trainers
No jeans
No t-shirts
No polo shirts
No shorts

I haven't had to wear a suit/tie to work (in the city) for years, it's all about business casual these days.

oooh, where do I start on this one? Himself is better than me on security, everything technical, computers, camera's everythng with buttons/timelapse/electronics in it, size, force, mechanics, drinking, driving, and Man Stuff.
I couldnt exist without him, he fills the gaps I am useless at.
I fill the gaps he is crap at, method, cooking, earning, cleaning, getting up, banking, diary, family, Its the couple thing, and acknowledged blend of skills.

I would spit, but obviously incapable of doing it as far as you. I must be weak. or incapable of drawing a bead.

"Women are great at making sandwiches and performing menial and degrading tasks. It's when they get those high falutin' ideas about equal rights and having the vote that the left and right guns have to come out for a little re-edumacation."

Not word for word, and it was said with a smile suggesting it was in jest, but those pearls of wisdom were uttered by an ex boss of mine. Who was a woman. And a lesbian.

Yeah, didn't really know how to respond to that one.

'quota'
you think I got where I am today, MD, as ******* quota????

please feel free to visit me, anytime, after 3.30 am, but before 8, when it gets busier as MY lads come into work. And we finish every day at 4.30-5, so you can catch me in my pub, the one I paid for to keep it open, in my village. Glass ceiling? smash it. Take that as a personal challenge? quad it, then shout Sucess!!!
always have done, been working in male enviroment for ovr 20 years, and have found you dont need a HR hand if you are good enough. And I hate to lose. If good, gender is immaterial. Get over yerselves. And stop blaming others for your weakness boys. Real men wouldnt. My hubby knows what he is crap at, and knows exactly where and when he is better than me, we bring different skills to the marriage, and work table, and learn to slot them along sides each other. ergo we all gain.
