...for those who grew up in the 80's and 90's

You forgets about the Montego turbo, best of the bunch, but thats not saying much.

The only cool metro is the 6R4, but even then the T16 and Turbo 2 are much cooler cars.

the vanden had the leather interior, i think they were third party interior suppliers similar to Pininfarina i think, could be wrong though!

No idea on interior, remember her saying something about a handling upgrade or something making it very maneuverable!

Lol, I had the MG Metro as a runaround after my XR3i got lifted :(
I also had a Fiat Uno turbo, that was mental but always felt like it wanted to tip over.

The Maestro turbo was a car a few of my friends lusted after at the time, then one of them went out and bought a Pug Mi16 thing that went like crap off a shovel for it's size.

I learnt to drive in one of them

b649 dgj was the reg

how i remember these things I don't know :p

Me too! F535TRX. Was my mum's car that she had from new because my grandad worked for the factory and could get something ridiculous like a 40% discount.

Survived many a journey to uni and back and I even managed to get a few quid for it after it passed to me and I eventually sold it on. Very few things ever went wrong with it but it was a bit of a tank. Did the job though. :)

I couldnt tell you the reg of any of my recent cars but my first 4 cars stick in my head perfectly

must be the three oceans worth of booze I've subsequently drunk since owning them?

car must have died now, been on street view and its gone (was always parked in the same place). Was a gold colour and was always parked at the far end of Pinnox st near Scotia Rd in Tunstall.

budget spec vanden :p

From 1980 the Vanden Plas name was added to the most expensive luxury versions of the Austin Metro, Maestro, Montego and Ambassador

like mini rolls royces

Ahhhh the Ambassodor, another weapon of a car, it used to be called a Princess till it got the ITAL design revamp :)

Them were the days, it looked like a door wedge.

I had one many years ago C336 BEC.........it was only 2 years old when i bought it.....god I must be getting old

I started driving in 1983 and drove my mother's old metro a number of times.
Frankly the MG Metro was completely cr@p. It used an A series engine dating from the 50s with a tarted up interior. I seem to remember the acceleration being something like 0-60 in 13 seconds. It was....rubbish.
Even the turbo was dog slow.

The biggest problem being that you could actually buy something genuinely good like the 205 GTi (both variants being great), the Golf if you fancied something a bit more refined and well built and the R5GTT if you wanted something stonkingly mad and with plenty of torque steer.

Being fair to MG, the Maestro was a LOT better than it looked. The turbo being about the first really mad fwd car that had acceleration comparable to today's faster hot hatches. Of course it still suffered from a body made of swiss cheese and the associated issues with actually applying that power, but it as a good car definitely hindered by a pap image (sorry, just to clarify that, I do mean the 2ltr and turbo version, NOT the dreadful 1.6 with it's permanently broken digital instruments).

there were also

fiat uno turbo i.e
xr2
dahatsu charade gtti
nissan sunny GTiR

the last two were proper bonkers! (although in fairness and upon reflection not 80's cars)

There was one amazing one and that was the MG Metro 6R4:
