Is it possible to update the mobo BIOS but retain the saved o/c settings?

I have an OcUK provided 4GHz profile for my i7 920 i want to keep, but am having problems with my new SLi setup and may have to update the bios.

HELP!

Cheers

And i if must lose the settings, Which settings do i need to manually record to restore my o/c?

Cheers

HI OCPete,

I updated the bios on my UD5 last night.

I could not find a way to keep the overclock settings so I took photo's of all the bios screens to refer back to.

I then updated the bios to revision 13f and all went well but didn't keep the settings.

I refered back to the photo's and entered the settings, which was a bit more difficult because all the screens had changed format so had to interpret them a bit, but finally got them all in.

Booted up and all worked fine. Ran for 5 hours last night and did not experience the problem of random lockups I was having. Ran Prime and furmark, game benchmarks and played a little games, and was O.K

Just take photo's of all bios screens and all should be O.K

Someone may have a way of saving the settings, but as I said I couldn't find it.

My system was running really well up until a few weeks ago when it started ranomly freezing.
I wasn't sure if it was the waterblocks I had just fitted, but having checked all of them to be O.K, now thinking it is something else, which is why I updated the bios.

What problems have you been having?

Take pictures of the cpu settings BCLK, multiplier etc, memory settings and of all voltages.

I just took pictures of ALL screens to make sure.

What problems have you been having?

Random freezes / hangs following 460 SLi upgrade. Def driver related, diff type of crashes on diff drivers. Not power / heat related. Rock solid with windows default drivers or on a single card (either one). Currently strangely MORE stable in games but regular freezes / hangs in windows. I was looking into NIC card driver conflicts but have now somehow screwed up the drivers and cannot revert to get the NIC working.

Windows reload then BIOS upgrade i guess.

This sounds just like my problems.

Has hung a couple of times in game but more in just windows, usually when the computer hasn't been used for an hour, screensaver kicks in and at some point hangs.

Again same as you, power and heat don't seem to be a cause.

If it happens again for me I will re-install windows onto a seperate hard drive and test that before installing on my main drive.

You're not using a SSD drive are you as you're main windows drive are you? Thats the only other thing I have change in the last month.

can you boot from flash with the updated bios with ahci enabled now?

I think I could before, I updated my bios from usb stick with ACHI enabled last night, the only thing that stopped me was that I had changed to not allow usb legacy support drive setting, changed that and was O.K

The freezes do seem to be when i have been away from the PC for a bit, but no screen saver is setup. It often crashed if i booted it (left it to do something else) and came back to use it a few minutes later.

Will try a full fresh windows install first to save faffing with the BIOS. BIOS re-flash second.

I'm not using a SSD. WD raptor boot drive, second HDD for backup / storage.

Mobo is SLi capable but certainly predates the 460 so there may be a conflict there. We shall see...

Cheers for the responses everyone.:)

Complete new win 7 installation and mobo drivers hasn't fixed my issue so it looks like i def need a BIOS flash.:(

And now my PC is not recognising USB devies in any ports. :confused:Thats when the devices work fine in my work laptop, and worked in the PC until a few days ago. WTF is going on?

OCPete, not wanting to speak too soon, and touching wood, my re-flash of the bios seems to have done the trick with my lockups, pc was on for 6 hours last nigh with an overclock of 4ghz, and no problems, ran several runs of prime95 and intelburn.

Hopefully!

Some good news at last! Happy for you mate!:D

I've got the USB working after a quick disable / enable in the BIOS. Which is good news too.:)

Did you use Q Flash to upgrade the BIOS?

Well it appears to be re-flashed correctly. It all boots up OK.

Now i just need to use my notes to re/oc it!

Oh and i hope this has resolved the hanging issue!

Cheers everyone!:)

Just though I'd add. When you flash the bios, there are two options;

Keep dmi data
Keep current settings

set both to enable and once you reboot you can resave them as a profile just in case or just boot normally with the settings from you previous bios version.

It is suggested to not do this as the settings can be corrupted in the upgrade process. If you think about it a new configuration option added to the BIOS would default and may conflict with the other o/c settings carried over, and a change in BIOS structure could lead to settings not copying over correctly. A risk to be avoided. It took me a few mins to write ALL the settings down but no i should now be able to o/c correctly...... hopefully
