Hey guys

Going to incorporate some fish oil tablets into my daily routine but I'm just wondering what the difference is between Cod Liver Oil and Omega 3 Fish oil?

Probs best to put this in the Sports Arena forums.

Basically though, they are essentially the same although cod liver has higher Vit A&D, and so you need to make sure you don't over do it. Not the biggest deal although I think vit A can cause birth defects if over 8000% or something. Not 100% on that though.

They are basically the same thing, just sourced differently, ie fish oil comes from fatty tissue of fish, cod liver comes from cod liver lol.

I would say Fish Oil would be the better option imo, mainly because it has averaged values of everything so you don't OD on one thing while trying to get your omega 3 up.

If you eat a remotely balanced diet there is no medical need for this, its marketing hype.

bah beaten.

If your into the gym at all though and count your calories etc etc, then there is need to get the right fats and the right amount :)

Introduce more fresh fish into your diet. There's no need to take all these rubbish capsules.

Problem with this - these days fresh fish of the dark oily sort tend to have higher levels of mercury and its quite possible to get mild mercury poisioning trying to get high enough levels of omega 3 intake - over prolonged periods its enough mercury to affect mental functions and long term health etc.

I bet you a Fort in the sea that you wont notice any difference.

Probably see more benefit from cat food.

The scientific research that came to any conclusion whatsoever about this stuff, showed that you needed to ingest VAST quanitities for anything to happen at all.

Quantities that would have your breath, urine, and any other bodily excretion stinking of fish.

Wonderful.

The acids in the Omega 3 family, EPA and DHA, are richer in fish oil than in comparison to cod liver oil. Yes, it's true that there is a higher level of vitamin A and D, and others, in cod liver oil. Fat soluble vits can be stored there so that's where we reap the benefits.

Oh, btw, you can take far more than the measly usual guide of 1 - 3 capsules a day, remember children need even more DHA for brain function than adults.

Sardines in Tomato sauce :) can be had for around 50p a tin, and its above your daily requirement

Problem is you can't guarantee your getting a desireable level of omega3 from this source alone without also ingesting too high levels of mercury and other heavy metals. Guide lines are around 300g a week but personally I think 200g max.
