I've got a bit of a problem here. I've had an Asus P6T motherboard for a while now, and whilst playing Civ 5 my PC just shut off. The computer powers on, but doesn't boot. The mobo lights are on, and it doesn't look like anything's been disconnected. I've left it for about half an hour and it still won't boot up.

Any help?

do any fans start spinning?
it could be anything from the PSU to the motherboard. I've had both.

Strip the system down to the bare min, 1 stick of RAM, CPU etc.. you can even leave off the graphics card as it will post without it, it'll just beep at you.

If it still happens do you have a spare PSU you can test everything with?

I've removed everything and there aren't any componnts causing a problem. The fans all power on. I've found the CLRT switch but im not sure how I should switch it.

I cleared the CMOS. Nothing.

Is there are particular method you should use? Mine consists of 3 pins and a cap that covers two of them.

It should say in your motherboard manual. Usually there are two methods:

1) Either take out the CMOS battery(oval shaped) from the mobo for few minutes and then place it back or

2) Short the pins with a jumper cap or a metal screw driver.

But you have to disconnect the PC power cable from the socket first.

Do you have any other spare parts to test with? Clearing the CMOS is a good idea too. Make sure you've had it totally unplugged at some point too, just to check. Could still be RAM (unlikely), GFX (also unlikely), PSU (very possibly), Mobo (likely) or CPU (very unlikely). I would remove all expansion cards, reseat the memory, try booting with one stick, reconnect all the connections to the mainboard and so on. The next sensible move would be to try another PSU or gfx card before you go changing the motherboard. Also, try and test the PSU with another machine.

Full spec would be very helpful.

You shouldn't be powering on the computer with the jumper in the other position, that (as it probably states in the manual) risks damage to the PC. The power at the wall for the PC shouldn't be on at all really whilst you're doing any of this. Leave it plugged in though.

Nope, but whenever you're working on the PC, the switch at the wall should be off. It's OK to leave the power cable in all the time as long as it's not on at the wall. In fact, I'd advise it if you're clearing the CMOS.

The power cable provides a reliable earth connection even with the switch off. therefore shorting out is less likely as the chassis goes to earth.

I swapped the graphics card, but it's still refusing to boot. I can't test the PSU as I don't have another one about, nor do I have te time or money to do so.

A quick revelation; I removed all of the ram and there wasn't any beeping. I'm guessing the mb's sound isn't plugged in. Is this something that would normally Have a cable on the PSU.

Just remembere the case doesn't have a speaker. I jut salvged one from another computer. There's a click, but no warning beeps, even when the ram's completely removed.

You may have just discovered this, but I've had the same problem as in your OP caused by a single duff DIMM. Maybe worth trying yours one at a time?
