Want reassurance about my spec

This is a bit of a thread derail, but it is following another derail so I guess that makes it better.

Alternatively you may interpret it as making it worse.

I think that the OCZ Gold range has become a bit of an OcUK phenomenon. It was actually something I selected when starting to plan my new build; based on timings, price and so forth it seemed like a fantastic deal. Just asking on these forums made me decide against it. Several people pointed out the flaws that apparently were inherent in at least one batch of these sticks.

Now, the interesting thing is that this started with what was supposedly a faulty batch from OCZ. I did not investigate this further, the recommendations found here coupled with the fact that the G.Skill RAM went on sale meant that it was an easy choice to go for those when time came to order. However, I feel like the advising of staying clear of these have become perhaps not a myth, but par for the course here. I still have no idea whether you should stay clear of them, but just about anyone who posts here will be told that one should opt for other makes.

Now, I think Liampope makes a valid point. Furthermore, there are alternatives that are competitive price wise. Thus the question is, even if it has become a bit of a myth, why should you take the chance? And also, word of mouth should not be discounted, however you should be aware of the fact that sometimes these things take on lives of their own.

The mentioned AMD processors mentioned above are End of Life and have been discontinued by AMD. We stock the new versions. We simply sold our stock before other e-tailers.

With the spec's suggested would I be able to upgrade the processor in the future without having to upgrade the motherboard (something I can't do with my old PC).

Peter_C and Mayfair please stop acting like parrots and telling people things you don't know about . . .

Heartily agree. Most of the people who complain about the OCZ have not got a clue :).

Although when I got mine it was terribly unstable, but I suspect that is because of the extra voltage my AMD board chucked at it.

The guy I sold it to had no problems though, guess it's just one of those things .

Now OcUK have thrown another variable into the mix.

I see the Athlon X4 640 is on offer this week. As it's only now ~£16 more instead of £27 is it worth getting that instead of the X3 440.

Also is the Patriot Viper memory that is on offer good, since I missed the boat on the Corsair (I thought the week would be Monday to Sunday ;)).

AMD® Athlon™ II X4 640

£76.36 inc *This Week Only Offer*
Good price there suzyb! :)

I don't know anything about that memory but because out of the 1000's of units sold a few people have still had problems with it "out there" apparently we can't recommend it! :p

One thing about the Patriot Viper is that it used an enlarged "undeed" Heatsink that if fitted in the memory slots closest to the CPU socket they will clash with a 3rd party Heatsink (if you are getting one, intending to get one) . . . If you are just intending to use the stock HSF now and in the future then this is a non issue!
