Hi peeps, I cant make my mind up and go for a hawk, or spend alittle extra and go for a 470? My res is 1050.
I'm ordering today because my gtx260 went bang yesterday.

Really?

I found a Hawk at £188 and these things can overclock to 950 stable without problems. Runs cooler and less noisey as well

Depends on the core (which is luck of the draw on any 460!) and on your definition of "stable". And bear in mind that I actually have one. Reviews frequently don't tell you everything you need to know. Sometimes the only real way to find out, is to actually buy one. Even if you just go by reviews, Harcop needed +170mV to get their card "totally" stable at 932MHz. And I would say that looks about right going by my own extensive testing (including using a multi-meter to check the "real" power draw of these cards). I know there are other reviews showing this card hitting higher OC's but that as already stated, is probably them having a more OC friendly core (and I do wonder at times if manufacturers "cherry pick" cards to pass to reviewers). Also 5 minutes of Furmark (which is some reviewers definition of stable) is not my definition of stable. Not saying that you might not hit a higher OC, just that it is by NO MEANS guaranteed.

I suspect one of the main reasons that the price of these has tumbled since release, is that they don't actually OC that much better than any of the better cooled 460's.

Having said all that, I'm still happy with my purchase. Just with I had had the self restraint to hold on a couple of weeks before buying.

PS. Also interesting to see (something that I've mentioned before on other threads) is that a number of the reviewers appear to have been given a version of AfterBurner that can apply up to +200mV to the GPU core. But the final "retail" version (available to everyone else) can only apply up to +100mV! So again maybe some of these reviews don't fairly represent the OC potential of this card. Though the README that comes with AfterBurner does still mention +200mV for the 460 HAWK. I suspect they put it back to the more "acceptable" bump of +100mV (maybe to head off too many RMA's with burnt out voltage regulators!).

Glad to hear you are happy with your purchase. The 470 is still pretty much the best bang for buck performance wise.

I'd be interested to hear an owners view of real world gaming temps.

Mines OC, to 700 core, 1400 shader and according to MSI, highest it's gone in gaming so far is around 78 i think, this is on Dragon Ages and Bad Company 2, i have a custom fan profile, of 65% rising to 70% at 70C, 80% at 80 etc

I dont really notice the fan noise above that of the case fans and it's a bit quieter certainlt than my old 280 which was also OC but not by as much 650 on the core

I think with moderate OC and around 60% on the fan, you should not go above 85 in most cases
