Hi guys, 4 years ago i built a machine from here and have made a few upgrades to it and recently trying to run Dark Athena and ARMA 2 it is really struggling.

Dark Athena wouldn't run due to an OpenGL error and ARMA 2 looks like a Playstation 1 game :p

Here are my current specs -

Windows Vista 32
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ @ 3.0 Ghz
3GB of Ram
ATI X1900 XT

I haven't overclocked anything at all, i'm not sure if it'd make a difference seeing as the hardware is quite old, I'm broke at the moment so i'm probably looking at a worthwile upgrade for around £100 if that's possible?

Much Thanks

for ARMA 2 you really need a quad core and a high end graphics card

heck, even my i7 @ 4GHz and GTX 470 @ 820MHz can't play it even close to max settings

as stulid says a gfx card upgrade is definitely your best bet, if your psu can handle the 4870 or a 9800 gtx would be a nice upgrade for under £80, if your psu is not the best then something like a 5750 would be ideal as it uses less power than the x1900 xt you have already.

Indeed, i do believe it is a very CPU dependant game hehe.

Well i'll purchase that card and try to overclock my CPU for now.

Thank you for your help!

The graphics card would be worth the investment over your current X1900, but you might want to invest a little more to be honest with you.
And regarding overclocking the AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, I would be interested to see how you get on, as I'm on the same chip and as far as I'm aware you'll probably only get it to about 3.2GHz stable, as it's pretty close to the "wall" of overclocking - i.e. there isn't much juice left to squeeze out of it.

I've found an ATI 4890 for around £80 but i forgot to mention that my current PSU is 535W so not sure if it's enough.

Also i only have one 6 pin connector wire (which runs off 2 peripheral power connectors).

Is there any reason why it won't work at all?

Thanks again

How does it perform?

I run ArmA 2 on Medium / High with my modest PC spec ...

AMD Dual Core 6400+ (3.3Ghz), 3GB Corsair XMS2, ATI Radeon HD 4870 Sapphire 512MB

But it is only on a 19" Screen.

For reference an SSD or RAMdisk makes a massive difference also, particularly in towns or when flying/moving fast as the game is accessing so much data.

Roll on a 64-bit version which actually loads more data into RAM and avoids/lessens this problem.
