Basically to cut a long story short I changed my degree to an nhs funded one by the uni due to my good grades last year so had to cancel my student finance. Two months later its stll not fully cancelled so now I've got £968 in my bank account from the first grant payment.

I've rang them nine times now to sort it but they just don't want to know lol so what the hell do I do

Stick it in an ISA and give it back when they ask. Make some interest in the meantime.

This is what I'm doing with my hilariously high tax credit overpayments which I can't get them to stop.

I'm in the same boat. Cancelled my student loans payment as i've recently had a change in circumstances. But last night the payment just goes straight in as normal.

Gonna have to chase it all up today. :/

Any news on this mate? I've been having a right go at them today for paying me it but they just said it'll be taken back out of my account at a "random" date in the future lol. Basically means I have to account for this money and cannot move it incase of it dipping into my overdraft if they did.

Utter joke of a company

They've only had TWO MONTHS notice....

And just watch, because they will just randomly pull it from your account again.

This exact case happened to my girlfriend last year, she didn't ever start in the uni course due to SAAS f'ups to begin with, however they continued to pay her the loan she would have been due. She called, and called and she got the same story you guys get, and eventually she managed to convince them to take their own money back from her... it's like it's an inconvenience for these people to get their money back? I'd be happy to get the money back.. evidently they're not!

Goodluck guys!

It goes on your balance and will get it back when you start working.

Edit, grant? Oooooh.....

Aye, grant :P

Just checking my online app from earlier this year and theres absolutely no way I can get rid of it online even though I can cancel the tuition fee loan and maintenance loan easily via the website.

Just keep it, they are so incompetant I assure you you'll never hear about it again.

I'm pretty sure they'll take it back as I've been on at them too many times now about it and according to the girl on the phone I spoke to last, my file is packed with notes about whats happening etc.

It's too big a risk spending it so I'm just lumped with it doing absolutely nothing in my bank account.

Just make a note that you will have £xxx be coming out of your bank shortly and carry on as normal. They'll take back off of you eventually, so in the meantime, just ignore it.

When something like this happened to me, they sent me a letter months later asking me to send them a cheque back. That was a few years ago, thankfully back then I had a cheque book. If it happened today couldn't write them a cheque as none of my accounts have cheques (do any normal current accounts these days?)

Anyway that was 5-6 years ago the system might be different now, thou I expect there system is still slow.

Oh and the letter also said you'll get a payment in a month send that back too as it is too late (what?) to cancel it our end.

Back in my first year at Uni (around 18 years ago) i was given a grant (to young users this is when the goverment used to pay you to go to university not the other way round) of £10 for my first term. I wasnt expecting anything (grants used to be means tested and my folks werent poor but werent rich either) so i obviously blew the lot on vodka (triple vodkas and a mixer for £1 in the union).

6 weeks later a letter for Mr House arrived back at my folks, which my dad opened (it had no inital) to see the threat of a CCJ and baliffs. Cut to my old man calling me a total deadbeat student ****** and going grade A nuts on me.
This was the first years of the old Student loans system and my dad had already flipped at me borrowing nearly a grand from them for my first year.

They will ask for it back, any intrest you make on a grand is going to be tiny so just whack it in an account you wont spend by accident when your drunk.

Still no change on this which is highly annoying. On my online account the full thing is still there as well with the remaining 2 payment dates :(

Anyone else having issues with student finance?

yeah same here i got everything in on time and they keep asking for more evidence that i send them and im still waiting for it in my 3rd week of uni at least this will be the final time ill have to deal with them. it really should be very easy for returning students but they always mess it up

A more suitable question is who isn't :o

Can't believe these guys manage the finances of every student throughout England. When I phone up the help staff are nice and helpful as possible but it seems the organisation is just inherently incompetent.

Hey.

Well I went to my local office in Exeter and explained the situation. Basically the re-application was too late to stop the payment, and as such, I was told to keep hold of it until my re-assessment comes through.

Which it's due in the next couple of days. The person I spoke to said there would be forms in the pack on how to repay anything i'm not entitled to.

Not particularly thrilled about it all, but there you go. :)
