Rather strangely...

BT has announced that it will be connecting Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly with super-fast broadband, a project touted as the biggest fibre-optic roll out in the United Kingdom.

The telephony and broadband service provider has revealed its plans to provide at least 90 per cent of homes in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly with a super-fast fibre-optic broadband connection, reports BBC News.

The £132 million project will receive funds of £78.5 million and £53.5 million from BT and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) respectively.

Which of course is awesome, but strange they picked the Isles of Scilly in this - considering a new cable will have to be laid down. We have 2MB broadband at the moment, up from 28.8k dialup a couple of years ago. That's good progress!
 
Does the majority of the Board of BT reside in (Or are thinking of moving to..) the Scilly Isles or something?

Also, this was brought up a few days ago, how are BT allowed to charge Line Rental for Phone Lines when Gas, Water, Electricity don't charge any rental for their lines/pipes? It is a ridiculous charge and should be abolished.
 
The weird way in which we do things never ceases to amaze me. My exchange, servicing 32,000 people in the largest city west of Bristol, will not be getting Fibre.

Yet the Isles of Scilly will :confused:
 
I know, very strange - the Scilly houses a singular BT engineer, entry level.

The exchange here serves 600(?)ish houses over 5 islands.

Very strange.
 
What I want to know is what the speed is...

BT are really on an advertising push at the moment, radio, tv, magazines...always saying the buzz-phrase "Super Fast Broadband". Not once though have I actually seen them say precisely what that translates as.

Now, I'm already on a 50mb broadband with Virgin. Within the next year Virgin will be offering 100mb broadband and I believe they are shortly undergoing limited tests on a 250mb broadband. So BT...what exactly are you calling Super Fast? Does it match my 50mb? Is it faster? or are we simply talking 24mb, which for me at least is super slow broadband not super fast :)

Well Virgin is different as not a lot of people can get it.

BT have an upper hand in the sense that, if they wanted to, enable tons of exchanges and install tons of FTTC cabinets and have a massive market. To people on DSL, 40mb is pretty fast.

No you won't. You will probably get 36-40mb if you do actually live across the street from the cabinet.

Look around Thinkbroadband and stuff and you'll see that the BT Infinity checker is very very conservative. Everyone has got a lot more than what the checker told them. I've seen people who live 600metres from the cabinet and get 38mb sync.

Its true that Virgin is more limited, I guess for some odd reason it just irks me to listen to ads and constantly hear them saying "Super Fast" not..Fast, or High Speed, but SUPER Fast, when its not even the fastest on the market currently. Then again I suppose there is rarely any actual logic to marketing of any products.

You are assuming the cable from the cabinet that I see out of my window actually runs to my house in some sort of linear fashion, rather than going half way to China and then back again (like the cable from between the exchange and my house)

If you really can see it outside your window across the road on the footpath, then it will be within 100metres line distance, so yes you will get near enough the full 40mb. If you are about 300metres or less, then I'd expect the full 40mb, most people online have got 34mb+ at all the distances i've seen.

The cable from the cabinet to the exchange doesn't care about distance. Its using fibre optic cable.

This sucks. I can't even get cable on my street, however if I go down the street there is cable there. Sucks how I only get 3mb internet, why can't they put an exchange nearer to where I live.
