Galaxy S problems

I'm just wondering whether any Android users here might be able to give me a few pointers on getting my Galaxy S fixed, please? I've had it about a month and it's been pretty buggy since day one. It's suffers from various lags and hangs a lot or crashes when apps are opening. It is usable, but having seen my brother in law's working at blistering speed, I'm convinced mine has a software fault.

I'm running firmware version 2.1-update1, kernel 2.6.29-umts_scm@S1-BUILD05 #2 and build number ECLAIR.I9000XXJM1.

I've tried updating via Kies (what a pain in the posterior - there's a bug in Kies which caused me some big issues fixing it) but it says I'm already on the latest firmware.

Presumably, this means that I need to wait until Froyo is released, unless I go with an unofficial build, which I'm kind of loathe to do...

Any pointers much appreciated.

HOWTO UPGRADE TO JPH USING KIES:
- Create a Shortcut on your Desktop with Target "notepad.exe", name it whatever you want
- Right Click on the new Icon and choose "Run as Administrator"
- File -> Open -> C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
- Add the following Line:

174.123.5.146 fus.samsungmobile.com

- File -> Save (If you get an Permission Error, disable UAC at System Settings -> User Accounts)
- Start -> Run -> cmd
- ipconfig /flushdns
- Open Kies
- Connect your Phone
- Wait till Kies has recognized your Phone
- Press the "Firmware Update"-Button
- Press CTRL+ALT+U+P to activate Test Mode
- Follow onscreen Instructions

AFTER FLASHING REMOVE "174.123.5.146 fus.samsungmobile.com" FROM YOUR HOSTS FILE!

Thanks to asgard!

Edit: dont recommend this one now as JPK (lastest one) is better though this is easier to install.

While the above idea is great i would advise flashing to JPK using odin.

There is a crasking guide on the famous xds site.

I'm a bit of a noob android wise, but i followed it easily, i find JPK is very very good firmware as long as u make sure you install the lag fix and use a good task killer.

Compared to my mrs desire on official froyo the SGS seems quite a bit quicker and when you use lancher pro instead of touchwinz on the samsung you'll fall in love with the phone all over again.

I don't think flashing Froyo is going to make for a better experience for you over JM1, which is a pretty good firmware. To rule out hardware issues I'd be inclined to re-flash with the same official JM1, factory reset, clear the cache and format the SD cards. See if that fixes it.

Just be wary that if you flash via odin then it may change the product code on the phone if you use some of the newer firmwares. This will mean you can't get the official firmware if Samsung ever release it via kies!

I'd say at this stage leave it a week as Samsung was meant to release 2.2 in September and it's not over yet (but don't get your hopes up as Samsung are renowned for being awful updating their firmware!)

In my experience Samsung are tardy compared to others because of the testing cycles they go through before release to make sure it works as well as possible. So if there's a delay, it's probably because they found a show-stopper.

Many thanks for the useful advice. Seeing as Froyo is apparently coming soon I'll sit tight for now and then flash to an unofficial firmware if the update doesn't fix it.

One more question. What's the best way to backup the device?

Alternatively use My Backup Pro... though personally I have titanium, but never needed to do a Full restore with it, however, restoring apps is a pain in the back side, with multiple prompts for each app to re-install :( But I think the donate version might be better.

Or you can download clockwork mod this makes a image of your phone and you can restore with one click worth looking at. As is the one click lag fix all available on the market.
Hope all that helps....:-)

Im using JM1 flashed with Odin, & don't suffer any of the problems your getting, though i did put a lag fix on mine, JM1 as been great for me.

Just try reflashing using Odin, it's pretty easy to do.

Im gonna wait until offical 2.2 is released before flashing that, as there still a few bugs that need sorting.

I'm on JPK with no lag fix but rooted.
It flies. Battery and GPS seems better too. JPH was awful.

To be fair, i tend to try them all and all the 'fixes' :)
just because you can

I cant get Kies to run - gives some random error and doesnt start....

people complain that they cant hear me very well on a voice call - or am muffled.... could this be a software problem ?

XXJF3 is my software ... worth trying some other version ?

(sorry to jump in on the thread) .... but you may help me at the same time :)

Could be a software problem. I'd update it to see. Well worth updating it IMO.
There are two things to consider.

You can wait for the official ROM which is 'out soon'. Nobody knows when i everybody keeps guessing wrong dates etc

or.....

Just install another ROM. Personally i favour this. It's easy and smartens up your phone. You can root it and improve it too. :)

cheers brummie ... ahhhh but which firmware and wheres the best place to get it from ?
and use Odin ? as Kies wont run....
