M5 worth buying

You are trying to find arguments where there are none. I'm not rejecting that car simply because the leather is cream. I'm rejecting that car because I do not wish to buy an X reg BMW M5 for £10,000.

I see, then I must have misread:

For now? I have said that if I was to find my absolute dream M5 it would be very hard to resist scratching the itch. This one, despite it's fantastic history, is not that car. I'd want one in Estoril Blue with champagne/beige leather interior and the satnav system. Simply because the nav system makes the dash much nicer. I am led to beleive there are less than 20 in the country matching this spec, so I doubt I'll ever have one.

He (Fox) can't win, were he to find the Rocking Horse Poo car that he seeks, some tit will no doubt laugh at him for spending £10k on a 10 year old 5 thats identical - near as damnit - to what he already has.

I would hope that some small part of Fox actually welcomes contrary discussion and alternate arguments, correct or not, rather than 'some tit' constantly scratching around and sniffing his bum.

Erm... Not really?

The only person who would come up with such tripe would be an uninformed moron who knows absoultely nothing about cars who's opinion really isn't worth valuing...

I am sort of struggling to see HOW you can apply logic to your "Favourite car of all time". Certainly when you're in the financial position to actually buy it. I certainly wouldn't let something as arbitrary as trim colour or lack of Sat Nav stand in the way of my dream car, but that's me :).

But what if your dream of your dream car was down to that exacting detail? It wouldn't be your dream car then would it?

I don't buy that, everyone in this thread can see the car in the OP is a fantastic one, but everyone can also see it would take a true enthusiast to have the balls to own that car.

If it were cheaper I'd buy it! But then I'd buy anything if it's cheap, it's not that I and many others don't want to own the car it just takes a special type of person (Loaded one) who loves M5's to buy it.

I'd rather have 9/10ths of the dream that none of it at all.

I personally think the accountant in Fox is over riding the car enthusiast/teenager who used to play NFS:RC ;).

Well it wouldn't have been your dream car anyway, if cream leather, SatNav, and iPod integration (actually did lol at this) were requirements.

Imagine all the factors that contribute to a car become your dream car. Make a mental list...Sex appeal? Sounds amazing? N/A petrol? Looks fantastic? Goes well round a track? SatNav? Road presence? Fun to drive?

Spot the odd one out. A car that fulfills all of the criteria to become a dream car yet fails, for example, on its GPS system or lack of, was never a dream car in the first place.

I see, then I must have misread:

I'll try and explain something which I thought was painfully obvious. I shall do this using handy bullet points.

a) I like BMW M5's a lot. I always have, I always will, its why I drive my current car.
b) My dream car remains an Estoril Blue E39 M5 with Champagne or Beige leather. It just does. They are even more stunning to me in this colour combination. Something about it is just so right in every way.
c) I do not wish to buy an M5 anymore. They are too old, they are too similar 80% of the time to what I already drive, they require too much expenditure to keep them going, and I want things which are not present in older cars.
d) Therefore, I will almost never buy one. But who knows what I'd say if maybe, one day, the dream spec one appeared. Maybe my heart would take over. Maybe not.

Get it yet? It's really not that difficult.

Wait...do you like BMW's?

You really are hard work. Firstly I was just explaining to you why the Nav system on the M5 cannot be replaced with just a Tomtom rather than saying the lack if ipod functionality would prevent purchase.

Secondly what appeals to me about the M5 is that it is the ultimate supersaloon car. Cost aside, which its very bad at, it does everything brilliantly. It is crushingly fast. It drives brilliantly. Yet it is absolutely loaded with extras at the same time and can cross continents effortlessly, albeit using lots of petrol. Thats what makes it so great. Part of the package are the things like a leather trimmed dashboard, double glazing, navigation system, voice control, etc etc. It's part of what makes the car what it is. It's part of why you buy an M5. It has everything, it is everything. It was, in its day, the ultimate money no object all rounder.

Because if you didnt give a stuff about luxuries you wouldn't buy a BMW M5.

You frequently resort to this puerile sarcasm.

I'll take it as a sign that you are admitting that avoiding your 'dream car' (pff) because it has the wrong colour leather and won't tell you which way to drive or play MP3s, is utterly ridiculous.

You frequently ignore reams of useful and well written points if they dont suit whatever todays crusade is.

The reason I won't buy my 'dream car' is because I do not wish to buy a 10 year old BMW 5 Series. It doesnt fit with the things I want out of my next car. I added the bit about the colour/trim because hey, who knows what we do if the heart takes over for a bit? Sometimes we might do stupid things.

I think it is difficult to a few of us because we can't see (m)any circumstances where we wouldn't buy an example of our dream car if we were in a financial position to do so.

I'm certainly not going to argue about it as it's your choice :).

I am too rational Joshy. Perhaps its another of my character flaws. I love them but the ownership experience would be ruined by the fact I'd be driving an old car and constantly having to get more and more things fixed, finding bodyshops to sort the rust, etc.

are they rusty m5s?

My 11 1/2 french hatchback has literally ZERO rust, ive been underneath it there is NONE. So i'd have thought a M5 would be the same story?

E39's do suffer from rust on the rear bootlids and inside the fuel filler cap. Mine has escaped it, but the majority of them do tend to get it in these two specific places. It's only cosmetic, mind, but it's still annoying.

I don't understand why you're giving fox such a hard time.

I turned down about 15 F430s that had almost everything I wanted but were missing one option or colour. Same deal applied to my 911 too.

What's wrong with me not wanting to settle for a car that isn't 100% what I wanted?

Nah, I think that's good. You're saving yourself from all that potential disappointment - They say never meet your heroes.

Unless your such an incredible fanboy that can see through any and every little fault and niggle the car is probably better to you in the games, pictures and reviews :).

Eliot: I know you're loving your GTI-6 at the moment, but do you really have to mention it in EVERY motors thread you post in? :D.

When was the last F430 made? Have they dropped so much in price that the vast, vast, VAST majority aren't going to be original owner cars with full dealer history?

You could afford to be picky, When we're talking about 10+ year old used cars that can be had for "sensible" money compromises should be made.

Thats true when you are buying a Mondeo, if its something you really love i suppose you might wait for the right colour spec.

I must admit i never have the patience so i end up putting condition over colour and spec unless its terrible of course (the colour)

I did that last time. I ended up with an absolutely immaculate car with no satnav and the worlds most boring interior colour combination. I love the car but feel pangs of envy every time I see a better specified example with a better interior colour, and tell myself that next time, I'll have the 'whoa, thats awesome!' interior.
