Found: first rocky exoplanet that could host life

Exactly, if they know about god then it's all confirmed, if not the good ole church will be there to save them.
I want Teki and majick back. The current crop of lightweight mentalists are no fun anymore :(
I'm not sure why, but that really tickled me, actually lol'd whilst drinking and spat water on my desk :(.

Amazing.

For those who don't realise the implications of this, here is a selection from wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliese_581_g

Scientists have monitored only a relatively small number of stars in the search for exoplanets. The discovery of a potentially habitable planet like Gliese 581 g so early in the search might mean that habitable planets are more widely distributed than had been previously believed. According to Vogt, the discovery "implies an interesting lower limit on the fraction of stars that have at least one potentially habitable planet as there are only ~116 known solar-type or later stars out to the 6.3 parsec distance of Gliese 581."[15] With the discovery of Gliese 581 g, the ratio of systems with habitable planets could be 10–20%[1] with "potentially billions" of Earth-like planets in our Milky Way galaxy alone.[16] This is thus a critical improvement to the Drake equation.

I think within the next 50 years if our civilisation doesn't collapse or we go back to the dark ages then we will find some sort of alien life. Even bacteria.

The question is how will we get there to be able to make any contact, will we forever be stuck on our planet reliant only on some sort of large telescopes or messaging system to the aliens?

Why would the discovery of life on other planets end religion?

I'm sure aliens who have been evolving for much longer than us will have answers to things our heads can't compute. I'm also pretty sure they will know there is no god or an almighty entity responsible for the creation of the universe.

When I say "sure" that means 99.999% positive. :D

I think we will be visited long before we start knocking on the aliens door. :)

So you think if ET arrives and says there is no God that all the religious nutters will believe him?
I think not.
Religion is about faith and an alien civilisation a billion years advanced than us won't have proof either.

Oh the ironing if we make contact with an other race of being then get cracking on some interstellar war because we believe in God and they believe in some omnipotent floating scone with 38 penises.

I agree. The moonbats will have to start thinking outside the box though.

How do you know they won't have proof? If they are billions of years more advanced than us, I think they could. :)

You're missing the point which is the concept of FAITH.
How exactly could ET explain to our weirdo's that God doesn't exist?
Just because he's been around longer and puts a good theory forward it doesn't mean he knows everything.
The only way he could upset the cart is if he brings proof that they spoke to Moses, Jesus & Mohammed were one of them etc or even they altered the genetic code to produce man.

How many of you would welcome our new alien friends if they looked like this:

Racist!!!

Even that wouldn't work. Any evidence or proof they could provide would surely come across as a hoax. I think the only way would be a Vulcan Mind Meld to erase the faith completely. :)

Just for some perspective, 20 light years is 117,573,371,500,000 miles.

So apart from the scientific discovery and all that malarky this makes next to no difference to anything.
One-hundred seventeen quadrillion, five-hundred seventy-three trillion, three-hundred seventy-one million, five-hundred thousand miles.

Food for thought: our radio transmissions have already reached them beginning some 60 years ago, so they have had plenty of time to respond and we should have received something by now. The punks just aren't listening. :(

I just love the fact how human race is fascinated by finding other life in space, yet we have intelligent life on this planet and eat it. If you were an intelligent life form would you say hello risking being eaten? I wouldn't. How intelligent does the new life form have to be before we decide not to eat it lol

ps if I can't have a zombie apocalypse, alien face huggers is a good second
