TF2: The MANN-conomy Update

I dont mind valve trying to make a bit of extra cash off tf2 as people would sell and buy stuff through websites. I do think a bit of a cheek charging 30 pounds for the polycount pack when people spent a lot of time and efffot designing the items.

What bothers me is how the game is becoming more about the hats and items then the actual game play. It was like playing a rpg at times people spaming chat trying to trade items, i almost expeted to see lfm to push the cart healers and tank needed.

I really hope its just a phase and it will die out after a week or so.

You can still get the items the normal way and it says on one of their blog posts that the creators of the polycount items get a % of the sales of their items. Wish I could have made a nice hat and get paid for it :p

As far as i know you can get all them item's apart from the hats/headgear for which you have to pay for :/ and if u aint got the hat then you wont get the bonus from the set.

Huh? Hats have always dropped, ever since they were first released. Just weapon drops are much more likely than hat drops, and on top of that there's lots of hats, so the chance of getting the one you want is very slim. So you can either wait for the random drop system to smile on you, craft your way to the hat you want, or buy it for a little cash.

If people want to pay for these things, then I say let them. Its not going to be a noticible gamelpay advantage, and as they said in the update, its been 120 free content updates now, so what's wrong with them trying to make some money from TF2?

It's a game, it's supposed to be fun.

If people want to get hung up on unlocks / spend their money on them, why not?

You can blast them in the face with your pump action weapon in the meantime ;)

Ah thats good then least the creators get something i know the guy who made the solly pack.

Theres just something about the whole system of items hats and trading in a fps game that bugs me. Some american kid joined a uk server he sounded about 12 the first thing he said was any one wanna trade just made me cringe. Looking at the tf2 forum theres been 32 000+ posts in the trading section in a day or so.

I think a lot of the stuff they have added is spoiling the game.

I was never big on these items anyway, never cared much for what hat I was wearing when I killed people :p

This was inevitable I suppose and doesn't affect me so I'm not bothered by this. Reading some more into this, items that actually have affect gameplay will all still be unlockable for free and items that can't be are all cosmetic so no one who decides to pay will have an unfair advantage. So in short it's just an extra revenue stream for them from people who want to pay and taking into account the fantastic support they have provided to the game since release then fair enough. As long as the model stays that way then I'm happy enough, only concern is to have money tied in Steam Wallet which can only be topped up with set amounts.

I guess you didn't read too far then. :p

There are item sets for classes that when bought give the class a "set bonus". For example for the Scout this is +25 health. The hat that is a part of this set (and required to complete it) can only be bought, it can't be crafted. The item sets are $18 I believe...

So you quite literally have to pay $18 to get a +25 health bonus for Scout. +25 health doesn't sound like an awful lot but for the Scout it is significant imo, and will definitely make already decent players escape situations they would otherwise have died in, and therefore represents an "unfair advantage".

I'm really not a fan of microtransactions as a point of principal, but mainly I'm cheesed off with the sheer number of weapon variations that are now possible. I know that sounds kinda weird but I remember TF2 back in the beta days and believe it was pretty perfect when it was released. After a long hiatus from the game I'd only just recently gotten used to the new class unlocks and felt that they were just about ok.... I guess the bottom line is that if I wanted to play Diablo-esque TF2 I would just play Diablo.

Yeah thats something that bothers me Durzel. What was wrong with the default game pretty much nothing. Also I have played tf2 in leagues and comps and scout is one of the most usefull classes, not only for scouting out the enemy and giving their team feedback but for also killing the enemys medic, steaingl the enemys ammo and health packs. So as you said 25+health on a skilled scout would make quite a difference

They have added all these bells and whistles and its taken away a lot from the orignal game. Some of the class updates was good and needed, the medic one for example. But i think they have gone a bit too far.

If the store proves to be popular in terms of sales which i susspect it will, will give valve more of a reason to release more and more weapons and hats.

I have known people to pre order games on steam just because you got a hat and then not playing the game.

How long is it before we see rpg type gold sellers trying to sell items and hats cheaper the store.
