TF2: The MANN-conomy Update

jesus how to ruin a good game.

So this is the future of valve micro transactions!

The had made this game consistently worse since the stupid hat update, I for one would never of bought it if I knew it would end up like this.

game was perfection on release.

How exactly has it been made "consistently worse"?

Seriously you didn't expect it to happen sooner or later with TF2? They've added an insane amount of free stuff and other patches. I am a bit skeptical about offering things that can't be gotten through the game but if people want to pay for stuff they can get normally in time then let them. Its no different to Guild Wars offering skill unlocks for PvP/Hero purposes. This is merely Valve taking the opportunity to make a bit of extra cash for a service they did not need to offer at all, its not as if they're segregating the community and ripping them off like MW2 DLC packs did.

PS. That comic is hilarious, wish the other 5 pages of fighting Hippies was in it tbh :p

started off a perfect game imho and each update as made it worse, not hard to work out.

So adding more variety to the game in the form of new weapons and game modes, maps etc, and letting people customise their character model somehow made it worse.

OK?

And if Valve hadn't bothered updating it i would which scenario would be more likely, lets see:

A: People whining that Valve have left the game for dead and that it got boring ages ago, and criticising lack of new content.

B: People saying ZOMG this game is perfect valve don't change a thing.

Somehow i think scenario A would win out...

To be honest, TF2 has gone down in some areas such as performance. When I started the game was much more simple and harder (thinking of the Spy here, he used to be quite the challenge) and now its just so easy, making everything less rewarding. I've lost some faith in Valve ever since they ****** up the Spy backstab - they 'improved' it by removing all that made the Spy a skill class like stair and side stabs.

Well side stabs were an unintentional glitch, and from what ive seen they can still happen ingame, though facestabs for the most part seem almost non existant. Not sure what you mean by the games performance is down, runs as well as ever for me.

new maps/modes is great the weapons spoiled it for me why change the balance of the game? The hats and stuff is ridiculous imho.

I don't think the weapons changed any balance as they all still have their positives and their negatives, a given weapon could be good in one situation but not so much in another. I don't see how that changes game balance as it was the same situation with the original weapons.

The problem is that they are essential to competitive play and you will have to own them too to get the edge. It forces you into buying them .

They aren't essential in the slightest. The only weapon I can think of that would really put you at a disadvantage not using is the equalizer for the soldier because it makes you run faster. That's it. The scout is better with stock weapons, except the bonk drink is good on occassion. The soldier is better with all stock weapons except for the equalizer. The demoman is especially good with default weapons. I can go through pretty much every class and say the same thing. You'll find that in the real competitive scene, everyone uses the default weapons most of the time. Except for the kritzkrieg sometimes.

The weapons really don't change the balance of the game. Anyone who uses the FaN, charge and targe, direct hit, etc are all at a disadvantage against people with the default weapons. As for the newest weapons, they're mostly useless. The new scout pistol doesn't actually slow anything and does less damage than the scattergun so that's not very useful (quite fun to use though). The black box is OP but I imagine most are going to favour the extra rocket of the normal one. The spy stuff is just weird and I don't play spy so I can't comment. The new sniper doesn't encourage you to get headshots so any good sniper is going to be better with the stock rifle. The pyro stuff is pretty good actually, the new flamethrower lets you axtinguish people really well, but the pyro is pretty useless in a competitive game.

Damn found another name tag. Anyone got any witty ideas as to what to rename one of my (preferably demoman ) weapons?

EDIT: The only thing I can think of right now is something along the lines of sticky balls, but seems a bit to crude even for me.

I don't mind the hats, they're quite amusing and add some harmless variety, but the constant influx of new weapons and usable items is a bit intimidating now.

I've been playing since the beginning, and can't help but feel that they're cluttering the game up with a lot of useless crap (dalakohs bar anyone?), whilst rendering some of the original weapons obsolete (Equalizer has replaced soldier's spade, medic's regular saw is pretty pointless compared to ubersaw, etc). Besides that, some of the new weapons just make the gameplay 'confused' - a sniper rifle that can't headshot anyone? Milk that when thrown at the enemy will allow you to regain health when shooting them?

It's all starting to make the game less straightforward and somewhat off-putting to play, especially if you only play the game occasionally and don't know about all the new stuff they've added since you've last played... you'll come away confused and frustrated, and perhaps even not bother playing it again. In my opinion they now need to clean the game up before even considering adding anything else - balance the new stuff out, update obsolete stuff to make it worthwhile to use again, and remove pointless junk.

Oh and while I'm at it, don't care that they've added microtransactions - if some people want to get an item without waiting, then fair enough. However, adding random item crates that drop for all players, yet you can't do anything with them unless you pay £1.99 for a key to open them... I think that's going just a bit too far.

You can trade the crates with other people, though. I don't have a clue what sort of things are in them, but you can probably drive a pretty hard bargain, since they are rare.

As for the game being hard to get into, I kinda see where you're coming from, though the abilities of each weapon are clearly on display. I agree that some weapons have been rendered useless, but this isn't exactly a huge issue. The equilizer needs you to be on low health if you want to move fast, I've always found it fairly easy to shotgun soldiers charging at me. It may seem daunting, but all pretty clear.

The crates arn't rare, Ive gotten two in the last day. What they should do is increase the rarity and remove the chance to get regular 'achievment' weapons (equaliser, scottish resistance etc)in them.

And add the chance to find keys, the £1.99 thing is stupid.

Loving this game at the moment - sticking with the soldier class. Quite enjoying how easy it is to get into.

You cannot not love TF2, it's impossible! There can be a steep learning curve though when you try more specialised classes : medic, engineer, and of course, the spy.

BTW, if there is a game that is good value for money, that's TF2. Considering how much I paid for the OrangeBox, and how many hours I have clocked...

I'd love if they didn't force that micro-transaction stuff, but if you can avoid it, then fair play. I'm a bit concerned about the custom servers that would try to exploit that. When there is money involved, it's never pretty. Need to read more about the actual mechanics.

I disagree, I don't think the new weapons affect the game that much. Especially not enough to be off putting. The only weapon that has truly been made obsolete is the shovel. The ubersaw is good, but people still use the bonesaw because it hits a lot faster and has a high crit rate, so it's good for killing people with. Like I said earlier the original weapons are better than all the new ones with a couple of exceptions.

How do you get new weapons in-game? Random drops when you kill someone?

http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Item_drop_system

Essentially, its random as you play. However, by earning the class achievements you can unlock three weapons for that class at certain milestones, but many of the newer weapons, as well as all the hats, are only obtainable as random drops, or buying them through the new store.
