How well do things like the spyder3pro work?

Not all colorimeters are created equal though. What are your requirements?

my requirement is to satisfy what is probably an OCD about things not being right ;P

I use photoshop fairly often too though.

If it's more to do with worrying it's not right than noticing a definite gap or limitation in your colour workflow, the i1 Display LT should do you fine. It's cheap enough to not hit your pocket needlessly, but it's quality enough to be worth buying. And you can use the colorimeter with better 3rd party software packaged should you decide to upgrade in the future.
