FakeSnake's thread of the Le Mans Classic reminded me to post this. Apart from the Panoz concept car, they unveiled the Audi A1 on the Audi stand at Le Mans in June. I got some pics.

They'd made a really big thing about the matt black one with steels, which tickled me as a hotrodder. I don't like it; looks much better in standard trim like the red one.

If they removed the red flames/lines and redid the back it would look killer in matt grey/black as it is it looks like its trying too hard to be something that its not.

Sat in one in Geneva in March and the new 1.4 TFSI thingy yesterday in Paris and I really do like them, they're very expensive for what they are and apparently not totally amazing to drive, but I'd still have one over a MINI.

I see the A1 as being possibly the ultimate in dissapointments.
Whilst the DS3 and 500 were naff to drive, at least they weren't killer expensive. Assuming it really is as drab to drive as most VAG CARS, the A1 has absolutely no excuses as it'll be bonkers expensive.

It might well have a great interior, but unfortunately I'd still have to judge on it's ability to entertain, and I get the impression that it's not in the same league as the Mini.

I seem to remember it being smaller than a Golf, but then it's difficult to judge since it's probably on a Golf floorpan...

I seem to remember reading that it's based on the same mechanicals as the Polo/Ibiza/Fabia. Taking into account how good they are to drive, it doesn't exactly inspire with confidence.
I've really never understood why people love Audi's so much, when most of them are based on seriously average underpinnings.

Because people dont care. This is what people want out of an Audi:

a) Look posh
b) Go forwards when you accelerate stop when you brake and turn corners
c) Have a 2 litre diesel engine that has cheap company car tax
d) Have 19 inch wheels with 20 profile tyres and S-LINE badges everywhere.

Thats all that matters to the average Audi buyer.

Approximately £21,000 for the 1.4 TFSI with 182bhp and a 0-62mph of 6.9 seconds

£5K more than the near-identical Skoda. £4K more than the near identical SEAT, £3K more than the near-identical VW. And it's the first S Audi that's not Quattro.

Do I smell marketing sell-out? I think I do.

That's remarkably incisive.

But it could just as easily say...

While it was originally planned to be called the 'S1' - in line with other performance cars in the range - this has been changed as it doesn't come with four-wheel drive, a feature included on all S models since the Quattro S1. Instead it will be simply known as the A1 1.4 TFSI. It will, however, come with 17" alloys, S-line bodykit and the seven-speed S tronic gearbox.

The way they marketed this thing, it is practically guaranteed success among the city type, nationally and international.

The car itself isn't anything special, just another stylish addition to the Audi range plus the benefit of entering a new market with something better than that A2.
