As title really. Upgrade available and looking at this as an upgrade to my current Storm.

Any thoughts and comments would be helpful. How is the touch screen? Storm is OK but not fantastic, so would like to see if there is an improvement there, especially on screen keyboard.
Performance of menus etc?

It'll be this or the Desire HD but not really played with Android phones at all.

Thanks
Andrew

I used a pre dev 9800 torch back in August myself

I like it although the menu's were a bit sluggish at times...OS6 is a big change for RIM so this being the first device with OS6...it was bound to be a hit or miss. For me i was only interested in it because of the new fangled OS, which i thought was pretty good despite the odd bugs here or there...there have been new updates to the OS which have fixed/rectified those bugs as far as i know.

Would i get one??...no and thats only because im not a fan of slider phones as it is but it is very well built. The touch screen is responsive, it doesnt use the shoddy click system but i found the screen too small for using the touchscreen keyboard to type on but for navigating its superb.

Plenty of reviews out there on the 9800 torch but if i was you, id try and play with a demo one in a phone shop ie voda usually have display demos in their shops...not sure if its been released yet though as i heard there was a delay due to the software...think they were updating it to the latest one which is much better than the one it originally shipped with.

Go to crackberry.com, they have forums there and you can get a good idea as to what people really think of the 9800 torch.

Hundreds of pages on the 9800 torch: http://forums.crackberry.com/f209/

But really everyone has their own opinion of the torch, some good and some bad....i always find it better to actually try the phones out before buying them.

This phones the reason why I'm delaying getting on to contract. I was about to get the 9700, then I heard of this being released. I'm just going to wait another few weeks to hear of proper first-hand reviews. I really like the 9700, I think it looks better than the Torch however if I'm going to bind myself to an 18mnth contract I may aswell get the latest phone I can as oppose to one which has already been out for almost a year.

Wait for the 9780 which is the upgraded model of the 9700 then.

The 9700 is still one of the best BB devices out there even though its a yr old...its getting OS6 hopefully soon...one of the reasons why ive held off getting a bb phone myself....want to see how OS6 runs on the 9700 before deciding to get the 9780 or hold off till next yr when there will be more better models out.

Ahh interesting. Thing is I've been waiting / putting off getting a new phone for a while now and now I'm itching to get something. Is there any mention of a UK release for the 9780?

BBs seem to hold there value well. The old bold, the 9000 still goes on the bay for well over a hundred quid. So if I get the Bold or Torch on a good tariff and then when the new 9780 is released I can still probably sell the Bold for around a couple of hundred or the Torch for nearer three and throw in some extra money and get the 9780?

I say that well in the knowledge that I never sell ANYTHING. :p

LOL possibly...the torch will hold its value as its a new phone...the 9700 maybe not so much but shouldnt be difficult to get at least £250 for it.

The 9780 should be out by end of this month or early nov....in fact was reading somewhere that Voda have released tariffs for the 9780 even though theres no release date for it yet.

Oh that soon? Then I may aswell wait. It'll probably be £35 p/m 18mnths about a month later as is normally the case with new BBs and Voda.

9800 torch!

O2 premium Business team aint much help.

Well i imagine it will be this month as Voda are releasing it or have released it...not sure if they have...they were supposed to last month but due to a software update they held back...same with the Canadian carriers ie Rogers etc...held back because they wanted the new updated 9800's

Thanks for the feedback. i will pop over to the crackberry website as well.
Glad to hear it doesn't use the click touchscreen. That is the one thing I dislike with the storm.
Screen seems a bit low spec compared to latest phones. Guess it comes down to quality and reliability or go for the bling of the Desire!
I think I will probably end up with the Torch as I really like the BB hardware keypads for typing.
Hopefully get a look at one tomorrow...

Andrew
P.S just realised Windows Mobile 7 is out shortly too!

right so it's out with O2 on 8th so friday! Thats comes from the premium business team at o2. No price yet!

My friend rang them last week as his upgrades come up and he wants the Torch. They told him to ring back today. So it might worth giving them a call today as they may know tariffs.

I had a look at one today.
Screen a big improvement over my Storm and the phone felt solid.
Didn't really get the 'wow' factor though, but as I said above I guess that is not what Blackberry are about.

Still felt the screen, when scrolling didn't feel as smooth as say an IPad or iPod Touch screen, where just a light touch works.
Not sure if other phones might be better in that respect?
IPhone not in the running though as I feel it is too expensive on the tarrifs I lok at.

There wasn't a Galaxy available unfortunately though so not sure if the screen is better on that?

The screen on the Galaxy S is suppose to be amazing. I've had a play on friends and it certainly is very good. However I need my phones to feel good and be to a certain level of quality. The Galaxy S is by no means a quality product. The plastics on the back feel similar to those found on 30cm rulers you got in school. I just couldn't live with one for 18 / 24mnths.

Thanks for that feedback. That is the main thought about the Blackberry. i have used one and dealt with many at work and they are consistently solid performers and seem to be able to withstand quite a bit of rough and tumble during their life.
