I've been given the task of looking for some new Brake Pads for my neighbour's VXR8. He has already been to Vauxhall but he doesn't fancy paying £800 for a set of new ones! Basically looking on ECP they don't stock any and neither does my other local motor factor so I have now turned to ebay. Looking on there, their are a few brands to choose from but most are them are Red & Yellow Stuff ones etc. I just wanted to see if anyone could recommend any good brand ones to go for and possibly any other online motor factors to order them from if better? From what I've gathered he's willing to pay around the £150 mark for them.

Thanks all - Liam

Monkfish and Walkinshaw Performance are a lot cheaper than Vauxhall. Goggle them.

Thanks I will look them up shortly.

Edit - just realised that Monkfish Performance sell them on their ebay shop so I may order them ones.

I can't answer the question, but it seems like an odd way to go about car ownership.

If they cost 800 but he's only "willing" to pay 150, why did he not do his research before buying the car?

But why pay more when he doesnt have too...

Well obviously, but what if the cheapest pads are £300? A significant discount from vauxhall, but still double what he is willing to pay.

My car is due a service and mot soon. So i want a full service, MOT and any repairs for the latter. I'm willing to pay £25

That's not the same at all.

Well it is. Brakes for £150 for a VXR8 aren't going to be very good are they. It's the same as buying rubbish tyres.

My personal rule of thumb (and many others) is do not skimp on brakes and tyres. They are what keep you on the road and from rear ending or killing someone.

OP, if he can't afford the brakes for the car he's bought then he clearly can't afford to run it and should sell it and buy something more reasonable.

Well yes in some sense, But you are just being silly with wanting to pay £25 for a service and mot. What i'm trying to say is, why does he have to pay £800 for a set, when he can get some for £300, yeah obviously its still over his price @ £150, but instantly he's saved £500 if he went for the £300 ones. So it just seems silly paying £800 when he can get some £500 cheaper.

a lot of difference between £150 brake pads and secondhand pads from the scrappy though, isn't there.

And he might be being silly saying he wants to pay £150 for £800 pads?

I never once implied he shouldn't try and get the best value he can while doing the job properly.

However, you still do your research before buying any car - especially one like this. If the £150 came from previous research, why is he asking his neighbour to source the parts now? If it was pulled from thin air, he should have done his research before buying a specialist car.

If he hadn't set the arbitrary budget and just said he wants the best price for decent quality pads, i wouldn't have blinked an eye - but the wording of the op makes it sounds like someone has bought something they cant afford to run

Is there though? 2 things - brakes on a car like this are very importantl, as they are on any car. So "cheap as possible" isn't the best way to go about it. Seconly, in percentage terms, this is like me asking where I can get pads for 10~20 quid, which would almost certainly only buy me second hand pads. So no, not as different as you might think

Did anyone even bother looking before telling him that brake pads within budget are going to be crap?

Looking at the first few results on eBay and he can have a full set of (front and rear) Redstuff pads for £158. You could probably find them cheaper if you looked harder.

I know Redstuffs are hardly the best pads money can buy, but they are also far from the worst - perfectly suitable for the OP's neighbour, I'm sure.

Yeah I saw the Redstuff ones off ebay too and I've just spoke to my neighbour again and he has decided to go for the Redstuff pads as a mate of his from work recommended them to him earlier so I will order them for him tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice all - Liam

Just because they are non OEM and are significantly cheaper does not mean that they are automatically crap.

EBC stuff divides opinion among enthusiasts but I don't anyone is going to say that a set of Red/Yellow stuffs is akin to scrapyard tyres.

Stop jumping to stupid conclusions. As has been mentioned before, there is no reason to spend more money than you have to.

See if the price of Yellow stuff is cheaper than red stuff, everyone I know personally who has Red stuff (myself included) has issues with the squealing at low speed, where as Yellow are harder core and supposedly less likely to squeal.

The AP racing ones are £120 from Monkfish

Job done

They're AP racing FFS, you cant get much better.

The vauxhall ones are stupid expensive because they are imported from a supplier in Oz, not because they are 4 x the quality of the AP racing ones.

you'd be hard pushed to argue that AP racing is cheap junk mate ;)

As said, the cost difference is due to monkfish sourcing from a UK distributor, the Vauxhall ones are flown from Oz hence the stupid cost.

I think the person in question objects to being ripped off. Brake pads dont cost £800 and if he's been quoted that then he's being had, and quite rightly is looking around.

And sure enough, Foxtrot has found the vauxhall pads for £450, so thats £350 saved already just by shopping around. But even then, pads for £450 ? The Porsche dealer will supply and fit a set of brake discs + pads for a Cayman S for £750, and thats before haggling !

Makes the £800 for pad only the OPs neighbour got quoted look rather silly dont you think ?

Theres a difference between not wanting to be ripped off, and not affording to run a car.
