Sorry if this is a repost (I did search) but this made me laugh.

Basically its a story about an iPhone and Android app that uses augmented reality and publicly available information from the Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast system to identify planes. I thought that it looked pretty cool but the Mail seem to be trying to make a story out of nothing.

The thing that really made me chuckle though is some of the comments at the bottom! :D Ian from Kent had these words of wisdom:
This app is a step too far, as it has no possible use in a civilian society and very specific use in a military or terrorist society

the 'phone networks CEO's should be cautioned for prosecution if the app is not withdrawn immediately and any customer who downloaded it be made to delete the software.

I cant work out if he is being serious or trolling? :p

wow that is pretty cool, i had no idea you could do stuff like that.

Its balls.

The firm behind the app, Pinkfroot, uses a network of aircraft enthusiasts in Britain and abroad, who are equipped with ADS-B receivers costing around £200, to intercept the information from aircraft and send it to a central database.

Its the same system that the radar sites use to track the aircraft. Its not real time at all, and can be as much as 25 mins out of date.

I notice the app has gone from £1.79 to £2.99 on the marketplace now, they must be loving all this free publicity!

I have a fancy gadget called EYES. With them I can see planes, therefore I could use my EYES to target the plane with a rocket launcher.

The government should ban use of these so-called EYES. Anyone found in posession of EYES should have them poked out with a biro.

lol!

It's not even a very good app. I've had it for a few weeks since it was released and it's woefully inaccurate and slow to update.
