Do you think 6 Series will beat the 460 in value?

Yes I do; they will need to give existing 5000 series owners a reason to upgrade and they have not had to shell out the R&D for a whole new architecture.

There is no real reason for current 5000 series to upgrade in most cases; my card spanks games at my res, why would I want a 6000 series?

But if they are great cards with great performance, they upgrade bug might start a-nibbling...and with christmas coming, they dont really have time for a high launch price and letting it down; they will want to shift cards from the get go.

Would think that they will set a card right against the 460 price wise with a bit more performance, however can see the top end cards priced accordingly.

From pure speculation point of view, I think the 6000 series card (whichever that are competing with the GTX460 768Mb/1GB) will be lauched at a slightly higher price and would try to win with higher performance plus whatever marketing gimmicks first, then if they don't sell as well as expected, they'd probably drop the price to GTX460 level to try to take the wrestle the "bang for bucks" crown off the GTX460.

One thing to consider is that performance aside, Nvidia cards DO offer more features than AMD cards...while most gamers would deem them useless, for others that actually take advantage of CUDA or Linux driver support is still a nice bonus.

So unless AMD offer more performance at the same price as the GTX460s, I don't really see the point of taking the AMD card over the GTX460s.

AMD will have much more maneuverability in terms of price than nVidia since their chips are smaller and less power-hungry.

While initially the 6xxx series might not be the best value out there I would expect that after prices settle they will be the best buy in every segment, providing that's what AMD wants. The 460 in particular will be a prime target since it must be the best selling Nvidia card by far, so I would expect AMD to either under-cut it or match it's price with a superior card.

Do you have any figures on the power consumption of the new 6 series chips ?, I am interested to see them.

I would hope so, I think it would be AMDs job to take away the value of the GTX460 and give consumers something better for the same if not cheaper price.

Given that the mid range GTX460 attacks AMD's only weak point it would be mind boggling if AMD didn't have a new card that's going to compete against the 460's at the £160-£180 and £115-£130 price points.

Must say I've been disappointed that Amd have not reduced the price of the 5850 to around £150 to steal the 460's thunder. For the 5850 to still be at launch price this late in the day astounds me. All those 460 sales could easily have been 5850 sales if Amd had reduced the price when the 460 launched.

They've never needed too, since demand has been outstripping supply. More recently they will have been moving production to the 6 series.

There's no point in creating demand you can't satisfy at the expense of profits.

This is the reason from my understanding, they can sell all the 5xxx cards they can make at the moment, no need to cut prices\profits.

I'm not too sure about the 'value' point of the 6xxx series cards to be honest, i've a feeling that AMD will be able to shift all the cards they can make at a slightly higher than we would like price ....... The green team i think will be where the value may be though, as they may need to cut prices some more...

I see that 5870's have dropped quite a bite recenty, Some places have highly overclocked versions for less than £260, but even at this price they are not worth considering until 6xx0 performance and pricing has been established. Hell, some places are still selling 8800GTX's for £300, so there is no guarentee that 58xx stock will every run out with current prices.

It is almost certain that 6xx0 cards will offer suoerior performance per £ than 5xx0 and Fermi. Better performance/£ is the only way to sell new hardware and all previouse ranges offered this.
