My mum's Toyota Starlet sounds like it's on the verge of conking out, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend me a decent replacement for less than or around £1k?

Preferably safe, reliable and if possible a bit swift.

Also, any idea if there'll be any trade-in value on a 1998 Starlet?

Thanks a lot!

LOL Yeah perhaps that was a bit self-evident ;).

Seems to be a bit tougher to find a Ford Focus for anything less than £1600 over here - what do people think of Renault Clios?

Reliability isn't the strong point of the clio, or renault as a whole.

Fiestas are good, Clios are neither unreliable or super reliable in my experience. People still tar French cars with the unreliable brush but I've had some that have been fine. As with most cars, looked after they will be fine, mistreated they will fail.

Mondy is probably a bit big for his mum, moving from a Starlet tbh... Fiesta is a good call. What about a Xsara? Ugly but decent amount for the money compared to the smallest stuff I suppose.

Something like this? Small engine, but cheapo is the name of the game
