Hey,

Ime thinking of putting together a system that consists of the Asus Crosshair 4 mobo and the 1090t cpu... However, is the Asus really worth the money??? I like the idea of the automatic overclock switch, although ime a bit apprehensive of it lol. Automatic and overclock shouldnt really mix! Its got plenty more interesting tools too, just not sure it demands the money...

This is the system ime aiming at getting:

-Asus Crosshair IV Formula AMD 890FX (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard
-AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1090T Black Edition 3.20GHz (Socket AM3)
-Patriot Viper 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C7 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (PVS34G1600LLK)
-HIS ATI Radeon HD 5870 iCooler V 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
-OCZ StealthXStream 2 700W Power Supply [OCZ700SXS2]

Ive been weighing up my options for some time now and this system is the one ime leaning toward. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Nice system, yes it's a pretty good board, but I wouldn't buy it for the auto overclock, nor would I even use it! There are cheaper alternatives that are 95% as good, just depends if you want the extra RoG features/colour scheme if you can put them to good use.

right now the crosshair and phenom are soooo cheap! 6 cores!
my mate just bought that build about 2 weeks ago and his pc moves like a dream. he loves his mobo and hasnt even clocked it.

its nice to have those functions avilable tho for when you want to tinker

These "super overclocking" motherboards are never a good idea from a value-for-money point of view, there are boards that will perform almost the same for a lot less.

Ultimately it's up to you, if you have the money to spare and want to treat yourself then why not? At least the Crosshair 4 doesn't cost £300 like the Rampage 3 though. :p

I thought that about some Gigabyte boards, they are clearly up there with the crosshair 4 but just wihout some of the tools.

Its difficult to decide because ime attracted to the crosshair and heart is ruling over the brain at the moment lol ime even contemplating getting the g.skill ram instead of the Viper x even though it costs more and the latency isnt as good just because I think the colour scheme would work!... so shallow!

Another thing too (this requires an entirely new thread tbh) is ive heard leaks regarding the release of the ATI 6 series gpu's before xmas and if thats the case then is it worth the wait for them? The 5870 will do more than enough but its trying to be future proof thats the reason for bein so analytical.

I suppose though you can say that about any piece of hardware and potentially buying something only to be left feeling gutted that the week after you find the next card/board/chip has been released.

yea i agree with your last statement about buying something and a week later something better is released

ive been waiting 4 years to upgrade LMAO

Its a great board but you will be just as happy with this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-283-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1782 for a lot less

at least go for the UD5 not the UD3 ( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-281-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1782 ). same chipset as the asus and seems much better than the UD3....

better board especially if you overclock, considering that it has got proper cooling for the voltage regulators unlike the UD3. I have the same problem, deciding between the crosshair iv and a cheaper good alternative. the problem I have with the gigabyte UD5 is the stupid childish (imo) colour scheme which I would terribly hate to see from my case window :/ ... I would even hate a mobo that still has got floppy and pata connectors on it, waste of space and looks outdated!

But once again theres a £40-50 difference is it realy worth it????

Yeh the UD5 is like £30 less than the Asus and £30 more than the UD3, kinda like a nice middle. I agree though i would easily prefer to be able to glance at my case and not think it was designed by LEGO.

The crosshair is winning so far!!

LMAO i can see this going on for four years and still regret the decision haha. Na i got about 4 weeks before i have to settle and i think i am pretty much decided so far. Sods law suggets though that someone will come along and make a point that completely blows the debate wide up again!!

hahaha thats exactly what I would have thought when looking at a gigabyte board, a board with childish baby blue lego blocks attached to it XD XD maybe they should open a bit their minds and realize that themes like the Asus black/red or black/gray like the EVGA are the way to go hehe

Hey Big Wayne,

Thanks for taking out some time to put that together. Its quite eye opening what money you can save or even spend elsewhere when you put your mind to it. However, my little mind is like a childs at blackpool lights, it needs something thats asthetically pleasing! Unfortunately its going to cost me an arm and a leg haha.

I already have a half decent case (Thermaltake Armor) from my previous build a few years ago and for now ime just going to upgrade what ive put forward and the new case and the solid state will come soon after.

The Gigabyt boards have bad press really with the pictures not doing them justice. They do look extremely bright and garish, almost as camp as christmas lol. I will say though they can look pretty decent if you have a complementing theme so to speak. If you see past the looks the boards are fantastic and the bios is overlockers heaven!

Big.Wayne theres a fault with your i5 build. That motherboard only support crossfire x16 / x4. You need SLI x8 / x8 support :P

You may want to contact ASUS and tell them they have listed the spec incorrectly then! :p

ASUS P7P55D EVO

  • 2 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (single at x16 or dual at x8/x8 mode)
  • 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots (at x4 mode, 2.5GT/s)
  • 2 x PCI Express 2.0 x1 (2.5GT/s)
  • 2 x PCI

Thats a bit nasty dont you think!

Big,Wayne I have been introduced to this forum by a fellow member and I have had my intelligence insulted within 10 posts. Quite harsh considering its from a model member who has been here since the beginning.

I dont think for one second I am waisting people's time, its a legitimate discussion, other people have also voiced their own opinions regarding the asthetical aspects of hardware sooo???

"Please do not waste our time we notions of aesthetics and indulge us in tales of how your wallet if bigger than your brain!" I think this comment is quite uncalled for! If you have no time for it then dont pay it any attention. You may be a lifer but you dont have to comment on it.

Anyways I sure aint getting on the wrong side of members already so thanks for help previous the derogatory comment and I promise I wont threaten to take people on my flights of fantasy, thats just between me and falcor!!!
