Hi,

Due to my car being written off last week, I'm after a new motor. Because I do a fair few miles, I've been looking at reasonable size cars, one of which being the mk3 Mondeo.

I've seen on autotrader that they're going for as little as around £800, I'm guessing for a reason at that end of the market, but what should I be expecting to get around the £1000 - £1200 mark? Unfortunately thats as far as my budget can stretch, I'm a poor student :p

Can anyone advise?

Thanks :)

Its a tricky one, 800~1000 is really bottom of the pile for a mk3 but would buy a really nice mk2.

Saying that, they are cheap cars to run and fix and the Mk3 is a reasonable leap up from the Mk2. So its a bit of a gamble, but not a huge one. Take a look at the cheap ones and see what sort of nick they're in

Well, as I said, I can stretch to £1200 or so, so does that help at all?

I'd prefer a mk3 tbh, as it does seem like a good step up from the mk2.

There are some around at that price - it's difficult to say what they'll be like. When I was looking a few months ago, all the sub 1500 quid ones were dogs. I reckon I would have needed closer to 2k to get a nice one. But that was a few months ago and could have just been bad luck

I think you're in for a long search. If you put in the time you'll eventually find a genuine bargain but you'll have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince ;).

Gah.

In that case, I'm guessing I'm going to find a fair few decent mk2's?

I've not seen a decent looking Mk2 in a very long time. Even the newest ones are 10 years old.

Get yourself a Mk3 but be prepared to see some absolute dogs along the way.

Ok, so the budget may be upped to around £2k - am I in "reasonable" territory?

My logic of spending more is that seeing as I do a lot of miles, its worth spending a bit more, speculate to accumulate and all that..

Yeah, there's a few good mk3s around for £2k. Watch for the usual stuff like knocking rear subframes.
When I was looking at these a year or 2 ago there was a lot of clocked ex-taxis tarted up to look like mid milage, 2 owner examples. Watch out for them.
