Man imprisoned for not giving police password.

nope if the image is on your PC its your problem... the site (i believe) sent conformation the girls were over age via their legal rep to the court, however this was not proof enough and he had to hire a PI to track them down and pay 2k for each cert... + fees etc etc...

Wasn;t there another case recently where the guy managed to get copies of every girls birth certificate proving they were over 18 except for one and he got convicted as she looked underage and put on the sex offenders register?

AFIK, it doesn't matter how or why the image is on your hard drive or even in the cache, you have to prove they are not underage.

Interesting thread, good read :D

What are the ramifications for the user if you encrypt your hard drive? Do you have to enter the password every time you wish to access it?

With regards to free ons like TrueCrypt yes...on boot up anyway

I think it could be more to do with the fact that you aren't actually saying anything. Just giving vague "Oh it can be done" sort of statements with no backup at all.

And? I'm not going to sit there and type out everything for everyone.

Gaining 'access'? What are you talking about, the data is encrypted, without the key to decrypt it you aren't going to be 'accessing' that data. I'm with the others, I don't think you really know what you're talking about.

Well I do, as I know how encryption in that manner works, so hey, upto you what conclusion you make :)

Sorry to lower the tone of this intelligent discussion, but - lolDelvis.

I know for a fact delvis once starred in a homoerotic remake of "Hackers".

He knows all about gaining access via the backdoors.

might have been me posting the same thing a while back...... (a few people say he went on the register but I dont actually know)

Report yourself for trolling?

yeah that would be a tad harsh.

Trolling? People have said '''merrr you can't do xyz' to which i've replied it can be done given the correct resources.

So just because i don't want to go around typing up an essay its trolling? Right

Ok, so excluding stuff like freezing the memory then trying to find the password from a memory dump, trawling other media/space to build a dictionary or find the password and commercial encryption solutions like PGP WDE/Pointsec where you have admin keys.. how would you get into this without the key and without brute forcing it?

depends on the software, most will require a boot password, without the password you cannot access anything..

remove the drive and put it in another system and you see nothing at all, or maybe an empty volume

We use Becrypt and PGP full disk encryption for work and they work like the above, you get a password prompt just after the BIOS splash screen, if you get it wrong the PC won't boot, and the HDD is useless connected to anythign else.

Once booted, they work just like normal, though I belive it slows the system down a tiny bit, it's not really noticable in use.

Don't believe that for a moment.

All you need to do is provide a link to the journal article containing this ground breaking discovery that the NSA apparently don't know about because they are using the exact same encryption algorithms.

Then don't be suprised if people think you are talking rubbish. It doesn't even require an essay, just a brief outline or one liner as to what you mean. The fact that you are evasive about any detail at all is what makes people doubt you, not the fact that you haven't gone in to great lengths.

Don't know about? Of course they do, i've never disputed the fact that they don't know how to do things.

I intervened when people started saying 'the police' haven't cracked it yet.

So you're saying the police did crack it and this is now a CT on the fact they found nothing but wanted him sentenced anyway and so lied about being able to crack it?

lol, evasive.

I just found it funny how people have disproved the brute force method merely because 'it takes too long'.
