Is GTX 480 good enough for 3d gaming?

Hi,

Been with ATI for donkey's years and presently have a Sapphire 5970 card. Recently bought a Sony 40" 3d TV, glasses, transmitter etc and am now looking to game in 3D.

Understand option I've got is to go with a NVidia card as they support 3d out of the box (correct me if I'm wrong...)

Will the gtx480 performance whilst gaming in 3D be comparable to the 5970 or do I need to look at dual SLi card options?

please advise what I should be looking at to get comparible performance at 1920 x 1080 on the 40" TV whilst 3D gaming, if not comparible.

Rgds,

Alan

From my understanding Nv uses a hardware form of DRM to only be compatible with specific '3D vision' monitors, so I doubt you will be able to game in 3d on that TV.
AMD are supposedly going to be doing something about their 3D support by Christmas in the wake of the new 6XXX series launch, how good it will be is anyone's guess.

Thanks - makes you blue in the face, why shouldn't any 3D card not work with any 3D monitor / TV / transmitter providing they meet a certain standard.
or is this all a con so as to get the consmer to pay out more?

could you advise where I could find out more about compatibility list?

You need a "3D Vision-Ready Display" Nvidia did this in order to 'lock in' Nvidia customers from going to AMD, as well as to 'lock out' AMD users, unfortunately it had nothing to do with meeting standards etc which evidently confuses the hell out of customers as your not the first person I'v had to break this news to.

Besides it's not a good time to get a GTX480 with the new AMD 6 series just around the corner.

If AMD officially support 3D soon with the 6xxx series, like has been rumoured, the chances are you should be able to use your TV as they probably won't add any DRM unlike Nvidia.

AFAIK TVs don't actually do the proper 120Hz signal required by nVidia's current implementation its nothing to do with "DRM". They are apparently working on a method for use with TVs.

I would reccomend either an overclocked GTX470 or a GTX480 if you want smooth performance with good settings. Tho my personal opinion is 3D Vision is a waste of time.

"SP: You know, with the 3D Vision programme, those monitors are locked out of working with ATI graphics cards. Nvidia locks out any cards other than theirs.

TM: There's a pin on the DVI connector which sends the signal to check the presence of an Nvidia graphics card. This is why those monitors won't work with us."

Interesting article, thanks for the post. Hopefully by the time the solution is ready, myexisting 5970 may just fit the bill and save me having to shell out again.
But have to wait to see

Thanks, we're all entitled to our own opinion. I like 3d, blown away by a demo in a sony store. Want to try gaming in 3d, may not like it but, at least I've given it a go.

keepin my fingers crossed, if it doesn't work with my TV, end of the adventure as I'm not shelling out again.

I'd imagine 3D gaming would be ridiculously immersive and extremely good fun if implemented well.

Can you imagine playing the next Half Life episode in glorious 3D? Would be epic.

Big fan of 3d gaming! Never knew about restrictive monitors. I've played on a sony 100htz tv. Not knowing of the restrictions :s so must have been lucky. The cable you'll use is a DVI-D (dual link) cable. Instead of the single link dvi-d's. Regardless. it'll be incredible on a large screen. it's nice enough on my 22" monitor. Half life 2/Metro/Dirt 2/Burnout/BFBC2 etc. GO FOR IT.

Well personally I haven't used my kit in the last 4 odd months aside from a few minutes on Mafia 2. It does work well in creating depth and realism to the scene but I don't see it overtaking regular 2D style 3D gaming which is why I consider it a waste of time given that most people have to pay best part of £400 odd to get the kit.

As long as the monitor/TV supports 120Hz then 3D vision will work.
There is no DRM restriction.

Where did anyone get the DRM idea from?

3D gaming is awesome!
Done it on a 120Hz projector (with no DRM, cos it doesnt exist) :D
