Hey

I've been using a core2duo e6300 now pretty much since when they came out. I currently have drivers installed to allow sli operation of my graphics cards but I fancy an upgrade.

Would the above be a decent upgrade from the core2duo? I already have a power supply, graphics card and fans which I will be re-using.

I want to use the SSD for windows, my steam directory and microsoft office. I'm unsure whether you are meant to put the swapfile on there but if not I'll use the samsungs for it.

The samsungs are for raid 0 for my pictures and important documents.

Would you change anything or do you have any suggestions?

Thank you.

I just noticed an instant error, I meant to put the 120gb bigfoot ocz ssd in my basket. Steam and windows on 60gb may be a struggle.

Though I may be tempted to remove the ssd, get some more drives for raid and have a raid boot drive instead. This would allow me to get the six core athlon within the same budget?

Thanks

Hey

I have an e6300, and that was a thought if I took out the SSD, I could get the six core AMD. I could go opposite and get intel but I figured the 6 core AMD should be able to hold its own? Plus the last AMD I owned was an opteron 144!

Hi there,

May I ask what your existing motherboard, RAM and graphics card and PSU are?

Also, what do you mainly do with your PC?

My first suggestion (if your mobo and RAM is up to the task) would be to buy a Q6600 CPU second-hand for ~£80. If you look at this comparison it performs similarly to the X4 630 in a range of tasks and overclocks well.

I would also suggest against RAID 0 drives for important documents and photos as the chance of loss of data is so much higher. I would suggest either RAID1 or a dedicated backup drive.

Curse my writing in a hurry! I meant RAID 1! My motherboard is an Abit AB9 Quadgt. I play games, BF2, COD MW2, CS:S, few driving sims and some older games. I also use it for a bit of video editing (very amauter, things like windows movie maker) and just general tasks - emails, music etc.

I have 4gb of corsair dominator, and the choice of either radeon or ati graphics - my brother isn't fussy which is in his computer, he only plays cs!

Would the q6600 be noticably faster? I've read on here of new processors coming soon, so I guess my money would be better spent on a small upgrade now, and a complete change later? Or at least I think thats what you may be hinting at?

Thanks for your reply.

Edit : PSU is a Enermax Liberty 620w

Ah, that makes much more sense then. Nice drives and a great price.

Would you be able to tell use what your graphics options are? as that will likely have a bigger impact on gaming performance than a new CPU.

I just had a look at that board and you seem to be in luck, with the version 16 of the BIOS installed the Q6600 works great. If you are going from a 1.86GHz dual core to a 2.4GHz Quad core then your performance in tasks like video editing should improve considerably - and modern games will certainly make use of the extra clockspeed and cores.

Also, have you considered overclocking? You will want to buy a new CPU cooler (a good one isn't massively expensive and a good investment) but getting a Q6600 up to 3GHz should not be too much of an issue.

Hey,

I have the choice of a (lol 4850) a 5850, or I have access to 2x gtx 460's though my motherboard doesn't truely support them without the modified slic stuff.

I also have in a box a swiftech watercooling kit, but I'd rather shy away from watercooling as I find it more hassle than its worth.

Would I be better off going for an i5 upgrade or something similar? I'm trying to find comparisons between the i5 and q6600 and am not having much luck at the moment.

Thanks for your reply.

Hey,

Any more help on thi one please fellas? I've changed plans and am going to go i5 instead, is the p7p55d-e a decent enough motherboard to get one to 4ghz?

Thanks
