Hi There!

I was one of the lucky people to win on one of the slots at vegas about 3 hours ago and got tax 30% for winning a jackpot!!!

I thought he was joking at first!!!

Is there anyway I can claim it back??

Thanks :D

Claim it back? From whom? You won money in America, I'd imagine that you have to pay tax on it under American law. You might be able to get around it if the laws deem you to fall outside the tax system as a non-resident, though I doubt it.

On the plus side, you won't be taxed in the UK, as gaming winnings are not taxable.

Could be worse, you could be the darts player Adrian "Jackpot" Lewis.

Getting the nickname because he dropped the jackpot of £75,000 on a slot machine in Vegas but being only 20 years of age, and the law in Vegas being you have to be 21 to gamble, he couldn't claim a penny of it.
He tried saying his friend won it really, but the CCTV had it sewn up.

Bless.

I'm not sure hence why I asked!!!
Some Canadians told me they claimed it back before so I thought there might be a chance I could...

Still $1400 from putting $5 in a slot isn't a bad return :D

I'd look into whether you fall within the system, as I assume you're only on holiday there and thus almost certainly not resident for tax purposes. Depending on the laws, you may not be required to pay, but it may be a job to find out and a job to argue the case.

Bit of info here.

They are legally obliged to withhold the tax. You may be able to reclaim it if you aren't actually within the tax system. That will depend on the tax system. I'll look into that later, if I can.

I thought since you're not a resident there then you don't pay tax, however your country of residence might take tax (obviously the UK won't as has been previously mentioned, but countries like Denmark IIRC tax gaming winnings).

That said, there's surely some sort of procedure, I'm surprised you couldn't just show them your passport/visa to show you're foreign.
