Could be worse, you could be the darts player Adrian "Jackpot" Lewis.
Getting the nickname because he dropped the jackpot of £75,000 on a slot machine in Vegas but being only 20 years of age, and the law in Vegas being you have to be 21 to gamble, he couldn't claim a penny of it.
He tried saying his friend won it really, but the CCTV had it sewn up.
Bless.
Claim it back? From whom? You won money in America, I'd imagine that you have to pay tax on it under American law. You might be able to get around it if the laws deem you to fall outside the tax system as a non-resident, though I doubt it.
On the plus side, you won't be taxed in the UK, as gaming winnings are not taxable.
Still $1400 from putting $5 in a slot isn't a bad return![]()
I'm not sure hence why I asked!!!

Do you pay tax by winning the lottery in UK?
thats the issue, over here its 18![]()
No, Lottery wins are tax free.
More correctly, all gaming winnings in the UK are tax free.
I thought since you're not a resident there then you don't pay tax, however your country of residence might take tax (obviously the UK won't as has been previously mentioned, but countries like Denmark IIRC tax gaming winnings).
That said, there's surely some sort of procedure, I'm surprised you couldn't just show them your passport/visa to show you're foreign.
