Hi Guys,

I'm after some advice.

A friend has given me the heads up for a public sector job coming up in his office. The pay increase for this role between 6 & 8k

Currently I have worked in my current role for nearly 11 years and have not progressed either in position or pay in that time.

Basically with the upcoming public sector cuts, do you think now is the right time to consider going from the private sector to the public sector?

Initial benefits of the move are
  • More money
  • New working environment
  • Skillset progression
Obviously there is no guarantee that I will even get an interview.

Thanks for your time.

If the role is quite a stable looking one then go for it. i.e. I wouldn't bother going for an IT support role in the public sector.

You have been in the position for 11yrs with no promotion or pay increase?! Way to hustle there captain. How do you do that? Wow, speechless

I'm no ladder climber, but even I'm earning 50% more than I was 6 years ago at the same company.

go for it, if anything it sounds like you need to change it up a bit. No pay increase in 11 years? what?

Thanks for the responses

Aye the lack of pay rises are for various reasons. Normally focused around, lack of budget, not meeting targets one year and I am supposedly on the right payscale for my job. Usual company BS.

The job is for a junior SharePoint developer, using C#.net. Currently I am a classic ASP developer, with not a lot of C# experience outside of what I have taught myself.

Because the client site I work on has not upgraded their internal servers, the chances of progressing my skill set was very low. However in March they finally got round to applying the .Net framework onto some test servers and are slowly rolling it out to the live environments.

I haven't jumped ship yet because in Swansea, there aren't many jobs that I can go for due to my skillset. Also as much as I hate to admit it, I've become safe and comfortable where I am. As a result my skills are stagnant.

nothing to be ashamed of thinking about the safe option at all. dont blame you in the slightest, wiht that in mind do you think the new job will be as safe?
its all nice thinking about the pay increase but if you lose it you end up with bugger all :p

Go for it. While it may be more uncertain you'll regret it if you don't. Your job at the minute doesn't seem like it's going anywhere.

Sharepoint development is bloomin horrible. But in your case, its slightly less horrible than ASP, so I'd go for it. However, I'd expect a role like that to be a prime candidate for being cut.

If it was me Id have a hard long think. The public sector at the moment must be a nervous place to be. Cuts here and changes there.

Sharepoint also is not great and is a complete pain to run. We use it heavily and its not very nice to use. It depends what your looking for.

Good luck on what ever decisions you make.
