I think i'm going to pay it, I cant be bothered to DIY anymore, I dont even have a trolley jack anymore, it was worth it on my old cars as they were old but this one (to me) is fairly new and worth keeping the history plus i'll get the checks and the history stamp

I think thats the right move especially as they are doing the gearbox too at that money.

It's still relatively new so it goes back to the main dealer. Previous owner kept a Seat FSH, so I do as well. :)

Depends on how much of that they actually do IMO...

Thats what i'm worried about, I am actually asking them to do the gear box oil on top of the 50k intermediate service which may or not include a coolant depending on who I ask! All very confusing

I've just booked it in but part of me wants to get all the bits together that I want doing and take it somewhere where I can sit and watch them do it!

I do most stuff on the MX5 myself, but the Mondeo will probably get serviced by Ford. Might as well keep the FFSH up, their prices are reasonable, I get a courtesy car and I generally can't be arsed to do it myself :p

Took the 3 series to an indy that dealt with BMW & Mercs as the nearest dealer is in the middle of Bath which is hassle to get to.

I take my work van to the Ford dealer as their pricing seems good to me - £25 MOT and £80 for basic service.

Main dealers wouldn't know WTF to do with my car, so I take it to a local performance Nissan specialist who only charges £30 per hour (Buffy on SXOC). I do a few jobs myself but given that the car doesn't see high mileage these days I'd rather spend the little bit extra to get it done professionally.

For the Mondeo, I just wait for the light to come on, then ring Arval and they tell me which Ford dealer to take it to, then I pick it up in the afternoon, ring Arval again and tell then what the Ford dealer buggered up (brake master cylinder last time) and they tell me to take it somewhere else who fail to fix it, lather, rinse, repeat a few times and then it's sorted.

Specialist unless I had a young car with a full service history already.

With the MX5 I'm doing it myself and it's not too bad.

i do as much as i can by myself, even the big things that go wrong. garages charge too much labour and for some of the things ive had go wrong a garage would charge more than the cars worth.
how much is a service from a garage for a small petrol car ? £50-£100 ? costs me about £20-30 for the service gubbins.

Mine goes to a main dealer but only because it's a company car and GE Capital pick up the bill.

When I had my own car I used the same backstreet mechanic that my family have been using for years without any issue and a lot less money than the main stealers.

I do what I know how to do, then get my mechanic mate to do most other things (and teach me how to do them)

Then I take it to a specialist for the rest

The BMW goes to the dealer because I don't really trust anyone else with it.

My girlfriend's Corsa on the other hand, goes to a local garage that does a decent job for a sensible price.

In the past I would work on the car myself. I used to do most things on my old Corolla for instance. However, lack of time, space and inclination along with a reasonable income means I can now pay for someone else to do it.

Bloke comes to my house, he has a huge van with all the kit on and does it for about £90 inc oil and basic parts.

I would do it my self but I dont have any tools and time I have bought them all whats the point.
