Help me stay awake...

I have a real issue with falling asleep when I'm listening to people. In more than once occasion I've fallen asleep in meetings and so on. Its terrible. I find playing with something in my hands helps or chewing gum.

I do what Garee suggested for about a fith of my lectures. Mostly the ones that are very theory based, where it's just blocks of information I have to know.
I find it much better than sitting there trying to scribble notes very fast while half asleep at 9am.

Edit: Coffee and sleep in multiples of 1.5 hours.

Routine mate.

Get into bed at 11:30pm minimum and doss about in bed with either listening to music or reading a book. Then wake up at the exact time every day, as in set your alarm for 8:00am and jump out of bed as soon as the alarm goes off.

Do that for a week and you'll be wide awake before that alarm goes off. All it takes is a week but most don't have the muster to keep to a simple routine (even for a week).

That should give you good rest, anything more than 8 hours and you'll start to get lethargic and feel like you need even more sleep.

Taking a bottle of water to class helps a ton too.

Fellas = korean ginseng, ladies = siberian ginseng (though not a true ginseng). :D

Do you find 6 - 7 hours enough? Fair enough if you do. Try aiming for 7.5. ;)

That tea? I'll have a look into that, thanks. I think they actually serve that at one of our uni cafes:)

Skip one of the lectures you're comfortable with and have a power nap.

Unfortunately it's one long lecture a day so the lecturer will be a bit miffed if you turn up halfway through the day every day. :p

I used to do this at my undergrad, I'd forget about getting up for the 1 hour 9am lecture knowing the 4 hours in the afternoon would be much more productive if I got more sleep.

7 lectures a day?! Really?

Getting up between lectures and getting some fresh air might help - lots of people in dark room for extended periods of time and the CO2 rises and everyone gets lethargic.

Yup, my coursemates are subsisting on coffee for every break to keep me awake (having spoken to last years lot they did the same). I don't particularly want to be drinking the vile stuff.:(

We have all the windows open and every break we try and go outside, still doesn't help a lot.

Try going to bed one hour earlier and see how that works out for you.

I begrudge the idea of spending almost half my day in bed, not that it will make much difference anyway, it'll still take me a couple of hours to get to sleep. Unfortunately I'm not one of those people that can just sleep anywhere at any time.:(

Hold the clamp open, stick your todger in. Guaranteed to keep you awake!

No, Just No...:p

What are you going to do when you go to work? ;)

I don't know about you but when I work I don't spend 7 hours staring at a screen doing nothing else. Even at a desk you're normally imputting stuff and properly thinking...;)

Drink more water.

True story.

I'm definately going to up my intake, nothing keeps you awake like needing a wee...:p

Pro-Plus, and lots of it.

For an entire year? I had a friend who did that on her undergrad (worked in a bar at night and went to lectures in the day), she was in a **** state after a couple of weeks.

That's what I try and do now, bed at around 12, up at 9:15 every weekday, doesn't seen to work now and has never worked in the past (when I was at school I did the go to bed at 10, get up at 8 thing, still an utter wreck by the end of the week and still taking an hour or to to get to sleep at night).:D

Thanks for the comments guys, definately more water/drink and i'll look into that ginsing stuff to see what thats like. If all else fails then coffee it is...:(

I found at certain times of the day I just get really sleepy, to the point I'll actually dose off at my desk and have a micro-sleep for a split second and get that 'Ohh **** just fallen asleep feeling when I wake up'.

An apple should give you more of a kick up the backside than a coffee will and you needn't worry about it going cold ;)

Sometimes though if it's just a dark room with a bright screen there's not really much you can do if you eyes decide to go to sleep!

Just because you aren't "asleep" doesn't mean your body isn't recovering, lie down and read a book or listen to some music, something to chill your mind down. 7 hours isn't enough sleep I don't think, you should try and eat more iron, drink less tea (if you drink any), eat complex carbs and drink more water.

To be honest though, I think anyone would struggle to stay awake for that amount of time, unless you are absolutely gripped by what you are hearing it's very difficult, imo.

True, however I normally just browse the web for an hour or so or watch a film before going to bed so not much difference to reading and music. Unfortunately unless I'm allowed to get up at 11-12 I always have less than 8 hours sleep. I don't think it's that anyway, once out I'm fine, it's just the hours of doing nothing staring at a screen.

I eat reasonably healthily (at least I eat lots of fruit and veg, raw and cooked s well as standard food and junk food) but I'll start taking in an apple or something to go with my Banana at breakfast.:)

You probably shouldn't do anything in bed other than sleep. Your body will associate bed as being sleep time and you'll nod off pretty quickly. If you read/watch TV in bed your body may end up keeping you alert when you try to sleep.

I've head that before and it's partly why I never really do much in bed other than sleep (no one for browsing on a laptop in bed for example.):)

Yes, sounds like a long day.

I remember when studying A-level chemistry that on a Wednesday we would be working all day long, from around 9 in the morning to around 5 - 6ish in the afternoon / evening. The concentration was naturally harder to sustain after a period of time and sometimes this was counter-productive. I wasn't just having lectures so at least I had a bit more variety in my day than the OP but it was a bit heavy going at times. This was compounded in my case since I struggled quite a lot with this subject.

If you do take something to help energy levels then I would recommend a natural product which is far more likely to work in harmony with the body. Less, much less chance of side effects as well.
