Quick question, am doing the gf's car at the weekend (R plate 1.2 mk1 Clio) but I've not done an oil change in yonks (and the car hasn't had one in yonks either).

Is the filter easy to get to if the car is on axle stands or is it a pain? I looked under the engine and I found what I thought was a sump plug, but it doesn't appear to be bolted, just a plastic plug. Is this right?

Easy.

The sump plug is on a thread, a plastic plug wouln't be a good idea. Filter comes off easy enough , i managed to get to everything with the car on the deck.

Ah I was expecting a bolt for the sump plug, is it done up finger tight then? what did you use to get it off?

The one i did was a little stubborn. I think I ended up buying a proper key for it, from memory it was a square key. It wasn't finger tight.

The sump plug wont be finger tight, it also wont be plastic (maybe you were looking at the coolant drain plug here??). If it has a copper crush washer under the sump plug you will also need to replace this

On my mk2 1.4 Clio the sump plug is accessible without jacking the car up, and it is a 8mm square key as mentioned above. The sump plug washer will either be copper or a metal and rubber one, depending on whether you have an alloy or steel sump. The metal and rubber washers are bloody £1.50 each at Renault!

Is it this engine? (D7F)

If so, its easiest to access through the drivers side wheel arch (remove the little plastic access panel). You can do it from beneath the car but its a little awkward.

It's easy. I did Vigoro's on his drive because he wasn't man enough to do it himself.

Filter is easy, reach down side/front of engine, don't need to remove any panels or parts.

Sump plug is also easy to do, with it on it's wheels, don't even need a jack, just lay on the floor under the car and crack the plug off. I used a 6" handled wrench as I'd left my tools at home and Vigoro only had small tools. Make sure you have something like a washing bowl to hand when undoing the sump plug. Crack it of initially (1/4 turn or so) then move the container under the sump and continue to unto the plug by hand.

Yup it's a D7F Engine.

Ah phew, I was worried I'd have to find my axel stands but if it can be done on the deck then I'm more than happy ;)

Depends how tubby you are of course. :p

I'm a skinny git so it's easy. There isn't much room for leverage, so you want to ideally use a long wrench. :)

just came here from google :D

im looking to do mine at the weekend, where might i find a square 8mm key to help undo the sump plug? Im guessing i have to go to renault to get the washers to reapply when putting sump plug back in?

wheres the best place to buy oil filter n oil, im guessing halfrauds here :(

I bought my 8mm socket from ebay for about £3.50, but they have them in halfords also. Renault will be easiest for washers, will either be an steel and rubber or a copper washer, most likely the steel one if you have a mk2. As mentioned above gsf and eurocarparts will be able to provide the oil filter, though if you know someone with a trade card (or just get one yourself that's what i did) then they are mega cheap from halfords and you may as well buy some cheapy oil from halfords also.
