Hi Guys,

I've just ordered a HDMI splitter a long HDMI cable and an IR extender for the remote control. Just wondering if anyone else has tried this and had any luck? Not sure if its legal either. Virgin want 5pound a month to have it in other room which isn't too much but I figured this would pay for itself and I can keep equipment. Getting the stuff delivered tomorrow so will see if it works. Also I spent like 25 on the IR extender thing but there was an IR blaster thing that was only like 10. Anyone know how these work?

Thanks

K

Erm I'm not sure that it'll work, as IIRC the V+ used HDCP for some content and from what I understand it'll only allow HDCP to one display.

The fiver a month extra VM charge is actually for a second box.

5 per month - they're charging me 10! (and the second box is non hd) might need to look into that

Although I do have the second box plugged into my media pc with extenders around the house so i guess I still get value;)

HDCP? I would be taking the hdmi from virgin + box directly into a self powered splitter then running two hdmi cable to each tv. Surely it won't be able to detect anything? Is rather do it this way as I can use v + recorder and hd. Only really me using it. Think it won't work then?

HDCP is the encryption used to secure the hdmi connection (HDMI is effectively DVI + audio, and HDCP is the encryption option), and requires a two way communication between the TV and playback device iirc.

I'm not sure what content VM might use it on, but if they do I very much doubt it'll work when connected to two TV's.

Yeah you may want to talk to them.

Im only £5.00 for full tv package. (not inc movies and sports lark)

If you are no longer in contract just say you are unhappy with the offers Newbs get they will soon ask what you looking for. Worked with me and everyone I recommend to. Also remember if you take out an upgrade im sure you enter a new contract.

Hmm speaking of the boxes have they changed?

My sister has got Virgin HD+ but it doesn't have a hard drive and she doesn't get the HD channels?

Is there a newer V+ box out now???

I've got a Samsung Virgin Box, it's pretty sweet, all black and has a blue ligh on the front with a really nice remote too. My friend has ad older box that looks horrible and it's v slow at loading pages ect. Mines isn't super quick but it's bareable. Well I hope all goes well tomorrow wiht my little endevor or i'll have just wasted a load of money. At least I know what to look for now if it dont work, a HDCP compatable HDMI splitter !

VM currently have 3 basic boxes (there are slight differences in the actual models).

Standard V box - either the old Pace or Samsung boxes, there are SD only.

V HD boxes - the HD version of the V box (I think there is only one model of these), HD and SD but no recording facilities, intended to completely replace the V box eventually from what I understand.

V+ - SD + HD with recording facilities, currently either Scientific Atlanta or Samsung.

It sounds like your sister has a V HD box rather than a V+, as i think they are now using the VHD's for new installs where the user wants HD but doesn't want to pay for a V+.

Thanks, I think in total I pay about £80 for two boxes (one is V+), two phone lines (with the add ons for cheaper intl calls and bits and bobs), all channels on both (sport, movies etc.), fastest broadband - how far off is that?

I see werewolf, thank you! Makes me wonder though, they've got all standard channels and Sky Sports, they've got the box connected via HDMI yet when I went to check out BBC HD it wasn't available?

I thought Virgin did not have a HD subscription like Sky charge?

Nice box though much more compact, and I don't think they'll care about recordings, the reminder function and catchup service is enough just a bit silly not to give them the HD channels?

((We might be going back to Virgin in December so I'm interested in that box for my room, and V+HD for living room))

I'm not sure why they wouldn't have HD for the "free" HD channels (IE those that don't require a particular package to get the SD version of), it could be a case of the account being set up wrongly, or something at the box.

I must admit I wouldn't mind getting my V box swapped over for a V HD one, but at the moment I don't watch enough available on HD to make it worth me ringing up and paying the fee to get the box swapped (I'll wait until either it's free, or the current box is playing up).

I called them a few months back and was told it was going to cost me £75 for a V+ HD box even though it says £49 on the website, called them last week and went straight through to cancellations who happily waived the setup fee and set me up with a V+ HD box and XL TV for a little over £4 extra a month on top of my normal medium TV subs, I got the Scientific Atlanta box which is ok, though the menu's at 1080i looks bloody awful and give me a headache if I need to look at them too long :(

Well got everything delivered, it all works perfectly so pretty happy with that however ran into a slight problem ! When I took the hdmi wire to my tv it turns out it doesn't have a hdmi port !!!! In retrospect I really should have checked before spending all this money but always jsut esumed it had hdmi although never needed to use it. It has every other kind of connection, vga, component, s - video ect. I'm pretty gutted tbh. What I need to do now is find something that can change a hdmi to component or vga that also splits the sound. I've been looking online but not really seeing anything, the only cables i have seen people are saying they don't even work. Any ideas anyone ???

Ive got a V+HD Box and a HD Box which now replaces the older standard boxes.

The new HD Box only gives you access to the HD Channels if you pay a one off £49 fee to activate them.

That box costs £5 a month.

Well with the setup i've made it's just the same as having a V+ box with HD channels aswell. It sends the HD channels in 1080 with not problem and only cost me about 65.00 in total, that was with next day delivery from two sites. Realisticaly it could be done for as cheap as 50.00.
