As per title, my Mum got a letter today saying that "due to her communication with the bank we have cancelled your card" etc etc
The problem is, she hasnt, she hasnt contacted the bank (whom she got the card through) for anything, when contacting Customer services, she was told that someone had phoned them up and cancelled it... so my Mum reopened the card... on further thinking and another phonecall to them we got told by the CS person that it was VERY unlikely that this was Human error, so someone must know my Mums CC details and address details etc so my Mum put a stop to her current card and is having a new card sent through and has set up a password... but this got me thinking, we shread everything, nothing goes in the bin unshredded with details on at her house, or my house, but if someone has someone how got these details, could have closing down her CC be some sort of test to make sure the details are correct and open other stuff up in her name, i'm arranging for her a credit check to make sure theres nothing open in her name we dont know about... but is there anything else we can do? will a credit check show everything thats in her name? Is this a new or even old scam? are we being actually being scammed?

What do you think guys?

Thanks in advance

I think you should learn to paragraph - my poor eyes! :(

Seriously though - I say do a CC check. But sounds like human error to me, anyway.

Maybe she left it somewhere and the person who found it called up the cc company?

Sorry about that :(

Human error was our first thought, but and i know there going to say that, but they said that there system wasnt set up like that and certain details would have had to be known to access the account.

I cant see the value of cancelling a card if you are at it, you wouldnt want to alert the person to the fact you have their details would you.

Don't believe this for a second - human (or, for that matter, computer) error can occur with any system. I had to cancel a card not so long ago due to having lost it, and when the bank sent me a new one it arrived pre-cancelled. How do they suppose that happened, except by some form of human error?

I'm not saying you shouldn't be taking all the obvious precautions, credit checks etc. - just that human errors can and do happen.

Thats understandable, but why would someone close someones else's card down though?

The only thing i thought was that maybe someone had the same DOB and similar or same name and there was a mixup when they had their card cancelled... were just a bit worried that something dodgy is going on :\

If you do a credit check be aware most of them recurring bill your card monthly unless you explicitly cancel your membership with them. So once you've got the report cancel.

Yeah, that with site like Experion isn't it? my Uncle did one not online a bit back, going to ask him first how he did that.

Don't really know the exact details - just mopped up a few times after people got hit with 6 months worth of subscription fees upfront after the trial period had ended because they didn't realise you had to actually cancel.
