Slow talktalk broadband

Yes. Try again letter when it isn't throwing errors. :)

I think I confused you...samknows website works fine the reason it doesnt accept my postcode or phone number is because iam in a new build flat and they obversely dont have my flat details on there system yet.

As I said I think iam connected to Havant, dunno how I can double check tho

Well removed the front plate on the master socket and plugged the router in there, speed has increased somewhat stil nothing great mind

Spoke to talktalk and they are getting there network team to look into it and get back to me.

Ive just put my number in and get this...

The bad news: BE broadband is not technically-compatible with the type of landline you currently have.

The good news: we may be able to provide you a landline service along with broadband, if you want a new line installed in your home (fee apply).

Go ahead. Take a look at our broadband and landline options.

Did you talk to telephone support or post on the TalkTalkMembers forums? If you called them then I won't hold much hope for you getting a resolution to your problem, I've been there and done that with the telephone support. If you want your problem fixed you will have to be patient with the members forum staff as they actually get your problem fixed.

Can anyone recommend me another router?

I've tried a load of different routers on my TalkTalk line, the best performing ones were Broadcom based routers and surprisingly the worst are the ones TalkTalk have supplied (EchoLife HG520b & the two D-Links they now supply) - the three I'd recommend are:

Thomson ST585v6 or TG585v7 (both Broadcom based)
Netgear DG834GT (must be the GT as they are Broadcom based, you can get these cheap from the 'bay as Sky used to supply them)

I currently use a DG834GT in Modem mode with a Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato, works wonders :)

Well I phone talktalk technical and they said remove the front plate on my master socket which I did and now iam connected straight into the back of the master socket and my speed has improve.

I called them up also, they checked the line saying there isnt a fault with it. Ive gone back to them and said there is and there network team is looking into it.

Thanks will try and pickup a cheap secondhand DG834GT. Whats this Tomato that your running?

Fair enough, let me know how you get on with them :)

Tomato is a 3rd party firmware which works on some broadband routers (not ADSL routers), I run mine on a Linksys WRT54G. It gives you some more advanced routing functions, the main reason I use it is for Quality of Service (QoS) which means I can prioritise certain applications/computers on my network. As I only have a 2.5Mbps connection this is a god send as even my girlfriend browsing the web on her laptop will disrupt the connection if I am playing a game, it's fairly simple to set up too.

You can use it on an ADSL line by either buying a ADSL Modem which supports PPPoE (the Draytek Vigor 120 supports this but has a poor ADSL chipset for long lines) or by putting your router in to Modem Only/Bridge mode - this is a hidden option on the DG834GT but it's easily accessed via a different URL on the router. The way this works is that your ADSL modem will sync with the exchange and your broadband router will send your authentication details to obtain an IP address, simples!

If you decide to go down this route then let me know and I'll dig up the guide to stick a DG834GT in to Modem mode.

Ok thanks, maybe I will look into the Tomato fimware in the future.

Well a forum member on TT just got back to me and he has changed my profile from 12db interleaved to 9db interleaved. Can you tell me what these profiles are?

Quick test again

The dB levels are your Target SNR (Signal to noise ratio) - the lower the SNR, the higher your sync. The problem is when your SNR drops too low it causes your line to become unstable and will eventually drop sync so the Target SNR (the dB level your router should aim to hit) is adjusted until you get the best possible speed and stability. Interleaving is a method of error checking on ADSL lines at the expense of latency (ping response time) but you do get a slightly higher sync rate with it turned on, the other option is Fast Path which does no error checking at all but as a result you get a lower sync rate but better latency.

TalkTalk have loads of line profiles, the Interleaving profiles are 24ISNRx where x is the Target SNR dB and the 24 stands for 24Mbit, they used to have 8ISNRx but when they rolled out free "up to 24Mbit" for everyone they dropped it. The Fast Path profiles are 24FSNRx, again where x is the Target SNR dB, eg. 24FSNR6 is what I am on at the moment; 24Mbit maximum sync rate on Fast Path with a Target SNR of 6dB.
