A young man's first time

Budget? I would recommend a better PSU, Corsair 400W (Depending on the graphics card you choose) is a better option, never go cheap on PSU because if it fails... i don't even want to write about it :(

Psu / case combos are tempting, but as this is your first time it wont be your last ! its a fun process you will surely enjoy.

Get a case you like the look of, get a powersupply you see good reviews of ! , a Psu is for life not just for christmas, i personally am an advocate for buying the psu that will cost more but outlast everything else in the pc, a good corsair 550W or 600W would be closer to your needs 450W leaves little room to maneuver in the future.

Good cpu choice, perhaps overkill, maybe the same model black a few steps back will clock as high as that one, but cost you less, im not sure i'll leave it up to other commenters to answer that.

Ubuntu should have no trouble using the latest nvidias or ati cards. It should prob just come down to brand loyalty and comfort for your case, you havent suggested a card like you thought you had , but for a system under a budget id get a 460 or a 5770, again at your preference. Decent cpu cooler, might perhaps need one stronger for that amd, im not sure.

Assembly is a cake walk, buy all your parts retail and everything has an instruction book, dont forget the Lube for your cpu though :) good thermal paste is always good to have for 6 pounds.

yeah but would it not be better to get the sapphire 625w modular psu for £15 more and will prevent the use of molex to 6 pin adapters

Good idea. Just depends how flexible the budget is. Up to you OP :)

I have omitted a beefier CPU cooler as you say you are not interested in overclocking at the moment. This could be something you add at a later date of course.

That corsair would be fine but if he can stretch to the sapphire it would be well worth the extra. Being modular would make it easier to build and get better air flow in the case and would be more future proof.

IMO i like the antec 300/902/1200 and coolermaster 690 II advanced and the dragonlord k62 series(windowed).
as most people would say you pick whichever case YOU like and depending on budget :D

AMD is better value for money to a point, but the i5 760 is quicker than any of the AMD quad core chips, for not much more money. That's why so many have them on these forums.
