I know on the news they were mentioning that there weren't many spectators for the Commonwealth Games. I'm watching the cycling on the beeb and there are literally NO spectators at all :D

I thought it might be because of where the event is taking place, round the state buildings, but there are large areas set out with giant screens so they must be there for spectators.

I think I've counted maybe 5-6 people on the route. Has this been quite normal during this event?

Hmm maybe they're just not that bothered. I was in Liverpool for the Manchester games and I don't know anybody who even mentioned they watched it on tv.

The WC in South Africa showed that it's usual for locals to be priced out of attending if an event is held in a 'poor' country. The Commonwealth games doesn't have the prestige or attention of that, or the e.g. Olympics so I can't imagine many people bothering to fly over. Plus also don't forget it's in October, not in the summer.

A few more watching the archery :)

No wonder they are scoring all over the place though, their technique couldn't be more inconsistent if they tried :D

Not really into Athletic games, and to be honest I get the feeling this is nothing more than a training ground for the Olympics?

The super bad press prior to the games didn't help them at all! Plus I'm not sure Indians are 'into' that kind of games, like someone said they only care about Cricket!

A couple of my coworkers are currently over in Chennai. They were planning to make a side trip to New Delhi, but were told not to go. It is a total mess there, completely disorganised. A large pedestrian bridge collapsed from poor engineering, injuring quite a few people. That's just an example of how badly things are designed.

It doesn't surprise me at all that natives would want to stay clear.

Obviously it's good for the games that they're not there, but why isn't America included? Not all countries that are part of the Commonwealth were once part of the British Empire.

Has it started already ? I thought it was years off from the building sites they were showing on the news :-/

Can anyone even name countries in the commonwealth off the top of their head?

Is the education system that bad these days that people couldn't easily name a dozen commonwealth countries off the top of their head? Especially as four of them are the home nations!

Just watched the cycle road race, and I was struck by the lack of spectators too, but on inspection, it looked like the entire course was part of a major building site, and many of the roads had barriers along both sides, as if they zones off a course from part of the city and excluded people from it.
Not a great way to race, 800million in the country and no one watching, bit of a shame for those taking part.
