oil analysis

whose done it? how much was it? where was it done?

i dont want to discuss which oil is best, so fanbois stand back.

i do like to try different products and go against the grain of forum myths.

Carlube do their range of triple R oils. there isnt a lot of info on google about it. posts on forums either say "its fine" or "you having a laugh?" when it comes to it being a good product.

im going to stick a sumpful of this stuff in one of my cars (not decided which yet) and then get it tested, then well see if its any good or not.

one car is turbo charged, used hard, never uses oil, so it would genuinely be in there for 6k miles etc would be a hard test given the heat from the turboz

the other is non turboz, used hard, oil stays clear for thousands of miles, but it uses 500ml per 1000 miles so after 6k miles, its not actually 6k miles old!

anyone got experience of this. cant wait to see the results.

I just tend to get Fords own oil, £18 +vat for 5L i find good value for money, i change oil every 6,000 miles ish. the mondeo never uses a drop of oil, but being diesel the oil goes black rather quickly.

if you decide to go synthetic, make sure its _ACTUALLY_ synthetic, companies infact (particularly the cheaper oils) just refine oil in a process that can be legally classed as synthetic, but is far from it and is usually crap also!

You'd need to get a sample of the unused oil tested so you can see how it's changed after being used in the engine for a few thousand miles.

You cant, I think its just a check to see any elements that would show up as wear in the engine. One thing it did show was how unnecessary changing the oil every 3k miles was, which most turbo car owners swear by.

How did they show that though ? Turbo deposits will build up over time and not show up in used oil analysis.

I think you are right though. People treat modern synthetic oils like 10 yr old mineral oils and change them far too often.

From what I recall, (I cant be bothered to go through the thread so going by memory which is crap anyway) excessive fuel contamination (probably smell that yourself anyway) but some bloke had some high amounts of bearing wear which showed up.

my older golf, 95 16v with 225k miles. after that many miles its allowed to lose a bit. doesnt smoke tho which is odd

the newer (2000) 1.8t doesnt use a drop. its not due another change for 3-4 thousand though

Thats what I thought, what is with these VAG engines using so much oil? Some are ok and then some use the same as yours but apparently its within VW allowances!

Without a reference or a bank of data on previous samples it will be hard to say what is normal and what is of concern.

If it's burning loads of oil you may be able to see if its liquid or volatile oil consumption at least.

ill get as much information as i can to make the most of the analysis. plenty of other oil analysis posts on other boards to compare with

Don't know why I bother to help, I have access to more oil analysis than you will find on all your forums put together. Yet you make out you don't want advice?
