Radeon HD 6870 to be 20%+ faster than 460 1GB

Are they calling it a 6770 now, thank the lord they did not go down the other path!

Still gong down the other path, the 6870 will perform similar to a 5870, the 6770 will not be based on the new cores but instead be a 5770 re branded to a 6770, like Nvidia with the 8800GT-9800GT.

If this rebranding (i.e. the 5770 with a higher clock speed becoming a 6770) turns out to be true it would be interesting to know if this was originally planned for or AMD being opportunistic and looking to make some additional revenue.

Wonder if they decided to bump up the product numbering i.e. the 6770 is named 6870 as it performs better than expected compared to its direct competition, that way they can justify charging more for it, obviously though they still need a 5770 replacement which is catered for by a bump in clock speeds and a sneaky rebrand…?

This all depends on prices.

For example if they shift the 6770 down into current high end price 5670 terratory, the 6870 into highend 5770 terratory and then have the 6970 sitting where the 5870 is now then that would be very fair.

On the other hand if they keep the £ per FPS the same or worse then it's just going to be a joke.

6870 is going after the 460 1GB, so expect a price tag of around £180-200

That's not how ATI has done it in the past, they tend to quite severly undercut Nvidia (look at the 4770).

They could just lower the price of the 5850 a bit and get by just fine.

No I think the 6870 is going to be a chunk cheaper to make and its going to sell for a bit less.

Otherwise what's the point?

It needs to be £140-150.

6870 going by spec will significantly outperform a 460 1GB and most likely be in 5870 performance territory, if AMD undercut Nvidia 460 1GB prices, I will be the first to say bravo AMD.

Well I was basing that on being around GTX460 performance levels, if it really performs like a full fledged HD5870, then I expect it to cost around the same £170-£180.

Let's hope that turns out to be the case as the 5870 is currently costing £100 more!

Yeah, this is my take on it too. A little confusing for those not in the know but bigger number still means better performance so it shouldn't be too bad.

That makes no sense to me. AMD are meant to have this brand new hybrid architecture which gives more performance per mm2 of silicon then the previous generation of products. What's the point in spending money on developing chips if you not going to use it on a new mid range which will be cheaper for them to produce?

Because actually the 5770 has decent margins as far as I can see.
