Go from e4300 to q6600 with a 4870X2?

OK.. so I probably won't be keeping the card forever but..

e4300 @ 3Ghz
q6600 @ 3Ghz

Would you bother changing for gaming purposes? (as I'm concerned the e4300 isn't enough given that I see very little utilisation of the 4870X2 in games like BFBC2. (Crysis = 100% utilisation though).

Note: I would try an q9450 or q9550 but really outside of my finances at the moment.

my q6600 at 3.2ghz is plenty to fully load my 5850 in bc2, a game which has provn to utilise quads pretty well. another good game to look at is GTA4 or episodes from liberty, as these are total CPU/ram hogs, apparently they're pretty much unplayable on a dual core, depends what you wanna play really, but as you mentioned BF:BC2 I'd say it'd be well worth it.

also u have an x48 motherboard, which apparently are pretty competent clockers for quads, so 3.0-3.2 should be a walk in the park, and if you get a half decent q6600 3.6ghz should be attainable.

last thing; don't buy a new q6600, as they seem to go for about £160 new on the sites you can still find them on, which is ridiculous.

a quick glance at your post counts tells me you can see the members market, which i can't, but from what other people have said recently there are still plenty going for <£100

ive got a pretty much the same set up as you a x48 rampage with a 4870X2 E5300 4gb of ram and iam getting serious bottlenecking with my dual core and got a q6600 turning up some point this week so ill give you my feed back on the gains when it arrives if you like

Yeah that wwould be great if you could. Always wanted a quad, but the lure of say an e8400 and the potential to get to 4Ghz is always on my mind, so a quad would really need to show an improvement.

I play a lot of games, but BFBC2 is one I noticed doesn't utilise the core's all the way, whilst Crysis seems to max them out (hence the temps on the card skyrocketing).

Just thought that I should be getting better than 40-60 in BCBF2 with a 4870X2 (1920*1200, all high except shadows which is low, no HBAO, No AA).

EDIT: Also Crysis seemed to stall/judder @ 3.07Ghz [NOT microstutter], where as at 3.2Ghz it didn't. Hmm.. perhaps something else is going on though with that such as the monitoring software causing it to act strange.

The Q6600 will cope with your gaming demands a lot better than the older E4300 dual core. With your MB a OC of at least 3.2Ghz should be a no brainer with a good CPU cooler.

I had a Q6600 for years. Unbelievably stable esp for O/C. I would highly recommend the Q6600. You really wont be disappointed. And they are reasonably cheap these days. *Thumbs Up*

I went from an E6300 @3.2Ghz to a Q6600 @3.2Ghz and I noticed a nice improvement in performance with the other components in my sig below. 9800GTX+ is fairly old hat now but it copes perfectly well at high detail with any game I've recently flung at it.

I took a look at the charts on Aandtech, and they mainly favoured the Q6600 for modern games. (e.g. L4D benefitted, Fallout 3 didn't, Far Cry 2 did).

Have other stuff to pay off first this month (A car), then will look at trying to get one :D

just recived my q6600 and @2.4ghz fps have jumped up on the farcry benchmark from 40 - 53 compared to my [email protected]

Edit just overlcoked it to 3.0ghz and fps are up to 65fps looking good :)

got it to 3.2ghz and its icreased again from 65 to 68 really having trouble with this chip as it is a very high vid off 1.325 any idea's idealy wanna get 3.6ghz looking at watercooling it and lapping it when the stuff arrives

no option in ati CCC as the crossfire is internally on the card if i remeber right and the only way it is disabled is through the profiles that ati make for sertain games correct me if iam wrong anyone as iam not 100% sure on this

and iam struggerling to get over 3ghz stable i can run a 3.2but some things it will crash on and needs silly voltages which on the intel burn test will go over 82 degrees then crash to get any where with this chip i think iam going to need a bit off help oc'ing and water cooling this chip as my last q6600 G0 with the same VID wouldnt go past this point either :(
