crap cleaner and windows 7?

i stopped using crap cleaner after it kept deleting my cookies even though i had set it not too, have no idea why it would still do that
maybe they fixed it in newer versions, but i havent bothered to try it

I'd still say its needed. If left unchecked, windows vista & 7 will accumulate a lot of junk that you don't need.

I've set it to clean everything once a week in task scheduler, so theres no need for me to touch anything.

As the above have stated, CCleaner still cleans out a bunch of folders that the Disk Cleanup Wizard in Windows still misses.

The registry cleaning still works - but is completely unnecessary.

i also use ccleaner, as SiriusB said, it still gets files that windows misses.
i also used to use steven goulds cleanup program

CCleaner is a great program but I also have never really understood the registry cleaning function. Not just in this but in other cleaning programs. Seems to find tons of stuff all the time!! I stay away from it...messing with the Registry is a no-no I think!!

I used to clean my registry with CCleaner and it never did any harm. It is basically deleting entries to files [or filetypes] that no longer exist and a few other things. It doesn't fiddle with anything particularly important.

I stopped using it a while ago since I never noticed any difference. My suspicions were confirmed when Mark Russinovich [What he doesn't know about the internals of Windows is just not worth knowing!] said that the size of the registry has virtually no impact on performance.

well decided to try CC again , as it was in the vista days that i last used it.
hmmm nothing has changed in win 7 64bit for me, it still deleted my cookies, even though its unticked in the options
so its been uninstalled again

Really odd, I use it in Windows 7 x64 and it leaves my cookies intact

I haven't used the registry stuff under Win 7 though

Thats interesting and has confirmed what I thought as well (I use the Registry function on an old computer just to see if it makes a diff..it doesnt!)

I do have Russinovich's excellent Systernals Suite, lots of nerdy stuff in there...some of which I admit I still dont understand but its nice seeing all those readouts and graphs!

You sure you were going into the 'Applications' tab and unticking the cookies for the browser that you use? The main screen just has IE settings on it.

I've never had it delete cookies by accident

I don't rate CCleaner at all these days. I've noticed that sometimes it deletes cookies it wasn't supposed to, not delete cookies it was supposed to, tell me there are cookies there that aren't there and tell me there aren't cookies that are there that I can see with my own eyes.

Needless to say, I stopped using CCleaner about 2 years ago and just do it all manually these days. Plus I reformat quite regularly so things tend not to build up to any great level.

Cleaning the registry will have no effect on performance or really anything at all except perhaps gaining back a few kbs of memory.

never used any of those reg cleaner or cleaner software, imo complete waste of time.

I agree with you, I think I've used everything there is at one point of other, all of which I hoped were giving me something but in reality they probably weren't. I don't use anything at all these days and either do whatever is needed myself (which isn't much) or just let the OS do what it will.

Gone are the days when I clutter up my main system with unnecesary and ultimately pointless apps, I like to keep things as simple and as basic as I possibly can, install the bare minimum, I don't even defrag these days as I never have that much on my system to see the benefit.

I'm a fan of CCleaner, an easy way of deleting temporary files, temporary internet files etc all from one easy interface.

Until Windows' Disk Cleanup Wizard is as thorough as CCleaner, I shall keep using CCleaner. I'd rather clean out all my old temp files, internet files from several browsers plus lots of other stuff in just two clicks, than run a wizard in several clicks and then manually clean up other stuff.

Registry cleaners are a load of crap, I agree.

Why would you want to remove your temp files. if you are browsing something that you don't want anyone to know you where it would be better to specifically delete the entries from your history. Removing your temp inet files will slow your browsing down, slightly. But often people sell it as something that will speed up your pc. These days with 2tb drives an extra 50mb of cache internet files is nothing. if you want to hide what you are browsing use one of the browsers secure modes. As even wiping temp files can be recovered with software. The only time you need to remove windows temp files is if you are running out of space on your HD but it will never speed up your pc. If you remove software correctly you should never need to clean the registry.
