Ok I have a dilemma.

My friend is selling his iphone 3g 16gb for £100 (can bring it down by £10)
the only problem is that the bottom left of the screen has a thick grey line, I've used it and its quick enough and it doesn't affect the function.

like this apart from the line is smaller and is just underneath the mail app so is more noticeable.

should I buy this or

Get the San Francisco?

I should also point out that I need a good music player that is easy to use while exercising.

way i see it iphone is a better music player and has a better build but san fran is a better phone overall. The Iphone is also out of warranty so if it breaks your out out of luck, but having said that the build is usually very good on the iphone. Also the san fran only comes with a 2gb card when as the iphone comes with 16gb built in. Quite a few other pros and cons but i would recommend the san only if music quality isn't high on the list because you can get very good players on the market place so the user interface isn't a issue only playback quality.

Huh? Why would he want to get an second hand old dog of a iphone 3g which is defective over a brand new san fran.

Oh I just skimmed through the post :D In that case yes don't get the iphone. Otherwise, I'd still recommend to get the iphone over the San Fran.

Because it has a better build quality. It might be a little old but it's still a good phone :p I know the San Fran is popular here so you are going to get a lot of biased answers but the iphone and San Fran do not belong in the same sentence. The San Fran is popular here or amongst techies because it has quite a high spec for a low price phone. Personally I'm not too fussed about ram, cpu etc on a phone. You might be different.
I'm not an Apple fan (don't own any) or a San Fran owner by any means...so just giving an opinion from a neutral's point of view.

iPhone build quality really isn't as good as it seems.

just because apple glue them up good and solid and put a nice polished finish on them, they're built no better than any other mid-range phone with no better materials.

I do like the looks of the iphone, it looks so good, but I think I would get bored with it very quickly. arggh I can't make my mind up

I doubt it. Plenty of apps, same with the Android. Go with the San Fran because of the grey line on the iphone you mentioned :p

True, I know but we are not comparing it with other mid-range phones :)

Biased answers or informed answers?

The majority of iphone users wouldn't be able to tell you what iOS they're running, what the spec of their phone is, what their screen res is etc.

pre iphone 4 iphones are appalling web browsers, the 3g will stutter on most new 3d games in the app store, has already been broken by his mate and really isn't worth the outlay.

The San Fran has a better, higher res screen, a better OS (in my opinion, that doesn't make it biased), is much better bang for your buck (even at the same price point) and is infinitely more customisable.

I personally could never live with a web-oriented phone at 480*320, that said, I do have a BlackBerry 9700, although had I been buying anything but, it would almost certainly be a San Fran right now.

As far as music players go, would you really want to be running around with an iphone for excercise? It's too heavy and too easily broken (glass screen, I really have not seen any device more prone to screen cracks than the itouch/phone). Admittedly the San Fran won't be amazing for sound quality, but rocketbox a Sansa Clip+ and you're fine, awesome sound quality and much more suitable for exercise.

That said, android now does have Ubuntu One (If you're a linux user), 7digital etc. and much more flexibility with music app choice, so the San Fran could be viable :)
