2010 Evo Tyre Test - now with added KU31.

9th out of 9.

The point is that people seemed to think this tyre was amazing, so it was interesting to see results which show that really its... a cheap tyre.

Who said it was 'amazing'? Sure I've sung it's praises, but only in the context of other tyres in it's price range. 'Cracking tyre for the price' is the term I used IIRC, and I stick by that.

I can get them for £35 each supplied and fitted at my local tyre place. That's stonking VFM. Show me a tyre that performs the same/better for a similar price and I'm there....

Everyone I think.

I like how things have changed tack from WOW THESE ARE AS GOOD AS CONTIS to LOL WELL WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FOR THE MONEY!?

'Everyone' most certainly were not comparing KU31s directly to premium tyres that cost twice as much. A few may have been - there is always that few, regardless of subject but I don't think it was anywhere near 'everyone' holding such an opinion.

Only in your mind could 87.5% be regarded as crap. 10% off 1st and 5% off of 4th.

You can buy a B reg Fiesta for £50, thats stonking value for money, show me a car that goes from A to B for a similar price and I'm there, shall we all buy one of those as well? :p

Not the same thing.

The B reg fiesta in your analogy is equivalent to buying chinese ditch-finders. The Kumhos are great VFM because the price/performance ratio is fantasic. When you start paying more you get into deminising returns territory, you can start paying 80% more money for 10% better performance. The Kumhos are a million miles away from ling-longs, but not *that* far off the premium tyres that cost twice as much.

They seem quite good on Kate's Mk2 Golf as well - but she says she doesn't find them as confidence inspiring as her previous Eagle F1s in the wet under braking. I'd have to agree.

We've switched the Golf from Eagles to KU31s recently. The performance difference in the dry seems to be minimal.
In the wet the Eagles are noticeably better, but it's not exactly night and day. Considering they cost 40% less than the Eagle, they don't feel like a 40% worse tyre.
I'll be interested to see how they wear compared to the Eagles, which did not last long at all on the Golf and is the main reason Kate has decided to try something else.

I think I still hold the same opinion.

Not that far off? Almost 9 seconds a lap slower than the best tyres on a track with a laptime of only just over a minute is pretty far off to me!

I still don't get why you find it so amazing and shocking that an averagely priced mid range tyre performed slightly worse than expensive premium tyres?

What he said, for half the price of a Conti or F1 I tried a set and found them to be equal to or better than the other tyres I had tried, Toyo T1-R, Yoko Parada Spec 2, Avon ZZ3 which are all in the same kind of ballpark.

I wonder how £118 Fulda Carat Exceleros would have compared in the tests?

Where do Evo get their prices from btw?

The KU31 in that size is only £86 on Camskill. I expect some of the others are cheaper too but that's a big percentage difference in price there.

It took 4.1m longer to stop. That's a car length, and the difference between hitting it or not!

Wow, 1 car length. Shouldn't be up peoples asses regardless. In the best result you would be touching the car infront. Drive right and you won't get caught out :p

You know what? I couldt give 2 ****s about lap times in the wet. If i was tracking a car o a wet track with the intention of hammering it, it would be in something known to do the job well :p

I'd actually really like to see a proper test like this with only mid-range tyres. The ku31 against the Toyo T1R, Falken fk451 etc. And at the same time throw a Chinese ditch-finder into the mix. Would love to see the results of that.

Actually, in the dry it's a capable tyre in comparison to the others given it's price!

So as long as you don't drive close to people and only take the car out in the dry then it's not a bad tyre at all! :p

You must worry that the budget range of tyres that are on a lot of cars are going to fall off the road and take you out at every corner.

Read the bold bit of text, saw sig, LOL'd :D

No wonder Fox wants THE best stopping tyres.

Wonder why he hasn't got the best anchors in the world to match :p

I thought the KU31's performed as expected tbh, no more, no less.

I'll respond to your (yet another) straw man. Actually yes I do make allowances for people with worse tyres quite often when stopping hard etc. Unfortunately you make a good point though, you could stop perfectly quickly and someone who is braking an extra car length could end up right in the back of you, pushing you into the car in front.

Code:
	                Evo £	Camskill £	Diff £	Diff %	Set of 4
Conti CSC 5P 197	174 23	11.7	696
Goodyear F1 Assymetric	168 152 16	9.5	608
Hankook S1 Evo 143	136 7	4.9	544
Kumho Ecsta KU31 112	86 26	23.2	344
Michelin PS2 216	199 17	7.9	796

Prices as quoted by Evo vs prices as found on Camskill.

The Kumho would seem to be even cheaper in comparison in the real world than it was in the magazine.

50 % of the price of the continentals for a tyre that performs 90 % as well (its score was only 10 % less)

Think that makes them a bargain.
